AMD putting finishing touches on R300 Series

AMD R300 series almost done

AMD is in the perfect position to capitalise on the recent PR blunder Nvidia has found themselves in with the GTX 970, with many opting to return their cards and jump ship to the brand new R300 series. But there’s no solid date yet, which has many wondering whether or not the trade in is even worth it. AMD wants you to hold out, because they’re so close to launch.

Responding to a fan looking to trade-in his GTX 970, AMD has said that they’re putting the finishing touches on their R300 series. It’s not anything set in stone, but at the very least it’s solidifying the fact that the cards should launch within Q2 this year.

“Hey mate, we don’t have an official date to share just yet but the second we know, we will definitely announce it on Facebook. We’re still putting the finishing touches on the 300 series to make sure they live up to expectation. Can’t wait to reveal them though. We’re pretty excited.”

Just yesterday a possible leak of benchmark scores from the new cards showed a massive performance jump, which would certainly even out the race once again between Nvidia and AMD. Couple that with the rumours about the brand new high-bandwidth 3D stacked memory configuration that could see speeds up to nine times greater than GDDR5, and you’ve got a lot of reasons to wait it out and see what’s behind the Red curtain.

I still think anyone wanting to return their GTX 970 is jumping the gun a little bit, but at the very least AMD is making it one hell of a tough decision. And we’re all winners when there’s healthy competition in the market.

      Oh you 😛

But seriously, so many people think that now that the memory design is there to stay, their 970 is suddenly less powerful. The reviews that made them purchase the card in the first place are in no way affected, so it’s a knee jerk reaction 🙂

This is what I don’t understand, You guys keep talking about how the reviews didn’t change. But they might still be happy with the cards performance on today’s titles, but future games may require more ram to run optimally, thus they were upset because they bought a graphics card does not quite have the amount of ram that was promised to them by NVIDIA

Most reviews (including ours) pushed testing well into the 4K range, and well above the 4GB requirement. So those scores remain valid with the memory limitation. In that regard, people could judge future performance from that alone, and it probably factored into their decision.

Nvidia hid the design intentionally, and people are justified in being upset about that. But the card still outperforms anything within its price bracket, thus making it an amazing card still.

The reason it took so long to find the issue is due to the benchmarks resulting in good average fps when pushing the 4gb. The problem is in the minimum fps where the games would randomly drop to low fps causing stutter. Therefore those scores at 4k are not completely valid. There has been lots of testing done to prove this. The gtx 970 gets outperformed by the 290x (especially at 4k) and has become a cheaper alternative ever since the vram issue. It s a little scary reading things like this from a person who apparently benchmarks cards affecting the decision of thousands of people

The 780ti, 970 and 290X trade blows. At lower resolutions the 970 and 780ti win. At 1600p+, the 290X pulls ahead.

The 290X consumes more power. Its 1.5 year older. It does costs less.

Lol its very simple, if you do gaming resolutions of 1440p and higher, return your gtx 970, if 1920×1080 is your resolution till your next Gfx card upgrade, then keep it. It never gets to 3.5 gig on 1920×1080.

Quite excited for these cards to release. I’ve always stuck with AMD due to value for money. But that was like…way back. Still stuck on the HD6950. I rate now is the time to get a new setup.

I’ve been thinking of going Nvidia next, but only time will tell!

So many cores to choose from! You’ve given me a few ideas now relating to the upgrade in the not so distant future. Time to consult my wallet and the PS4, she’s jealous.

Any of you guys updated it to the 6970 specs? As there are 100+ stream processors there for the taking. Im planning on tweaking my GPU to give it a bit MOAR until the 300 series.
