Blu-Ray killing HD-DVD in Europe

While HD-DVD has been releasing insane special after insane special in the US it seems like they have decided to ignore Europe entirely…

I am not sure why that is but it could well come back to bite them… Blu-Ray has just announced that it has sold over 1 million Blu-Rays have been sold in Europe, accounting for 73% of all HD sales… seriously that is a low number.

Anyway if you in PS3 games this jumps to over 21 million. Why you would include PS3 games in Blu-Ray sales figures is beyond me though… however we now know that 20 million PS3 games have been sold in Europe…

When you see these kind of numbers being bandied around and realise that BD and HD-DVD combined have sold fewer movies than the Olsen twins it really puts the format “war” in perspective. Its really just a skirmish at the moment , like two pimple faced geeks arguing in the back of class over who would win in a fight , Captain America or Wolverine.

Wolverine!!! oh wait that wasn’t the questoin 😉

I do agree with you though, which is why the lead that either platform has anywhere is pointless as the figures are pathetic.

Thats the thing we somtimes forget that “we” as forum/blog readers arnt exactly the normal buying public, we are early adopters and tech wiz’s. The normal public hasnt even heard about bluray/hd dvd yet. Heck most people dont even know what HD is.

But then again, the start is the most important period, this is where companies build mind share. Which ever format hits “public” eye first will be the winner!

If there’s a winner at all.

While I’ll admit, our visual perception is far more developed than our hearing, I can’t help thinking SACD versus DVD-Audio.

The leap from VHS to DVD was a big one with many benefits for the man on the street. In terms of quality and convenience and all that came for a mere 1000 bokke. HD’s only benefit is a visual one and involves getting a pricy player , a new TV and replacing your old DVD collection (mines about 200 strong and I don’t consider myself to be a collector). These factors all suggest that mass market acceptance is still some distance away – or as doobiwan correctly points out a non-event like SACD/DVD-Audio. BluRay could turn out to be the laser disc of our generation

With things like 50Mbps Fiber to the home starting to roll out all over Europe, Asia and the US, TiVO, Apple TV, Amazon unbox, XBLVM, and even Sony’s proposed online video store, I can’t help but think that’s going to be the case bhw.
