At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who has the most RAM, jigglywatts or Kinections when it comes to gaming. It’s all about the experience that is earned from saving the day on the big screen. Right now though, you lot don’t care and want to see some numbers instead. FINE! Here ya go!

An interesting e-penis measurement, amirite? Locally, the Playstation 4 has always dominated the console scene, but the Xbox 360 has made some significant headway over the last couple of years with cheaper options for consoles.
If there’s one thing that will settle who wins in the South African battlefield for console supremacy, it’s going to be the final price. Also, I hear that Nintendo released a next-gen console last year. Maybe that will factor into this market somehow.

GDDR 3 and GDDR 5 …..

LOL… DDR3 vs GDDR5. Neither has an advantage over the other. Anyways, the Xbox One is not using that for rendering.
Umar 'Van Hohenhaim' Bastra
May 22, 2013 at 14:55
It’s not a DEFINING factor …. But it still is a factor. Rendering has nothing to do with it, this was just in terms of pure performance.

Big issue here is, M$ using 3GB of that 8GB for the OS, where PS is only using 1GB of the 8GB….more RAM = WIN!

Yeah I did find that very wierd hey, 3 gigs is a hell of a lot

Agreed, it’s how it gets used anyway. I think we’ll hardly see a difference in performance except for a couple of exclusive titles which will get optimised for their relevant platforms.
The era of raw power has come to an end with the PS3. It has become economically impossible for companies to invest the amount of cash that $ony threw at the PS3 development. The PS3 is a more powerful unit by some margin when compared to a X360 but the games we play are virtually identical on both platforms.

So many key points missed with that comparisson. The Xbox One’s CPU is a MS custom designed 8-Core CPU and not just some 8-core off-the-shellf stuff. The GPU is DX11.1 32mb embedded memory, not an off-the-shelf Radeon GPU. Also, the embedded memory GPU will bring in a new type of GPU to the market which gives programmers a faster turn around time.
MS will have to work on exclusives annually or all that horsepower will go to waste and that’s where Sony can capitalize.

Regarding custom CPUs, am I correct in saying that that is the opposite of what happened with the XBox 360 and PS3. The custom CPU of the PS3 is what caused the issues with Skyrim, right?
FoxOneZA - X-Therminator
May 22, 2013 at 14:46
Correct about the PS3 but the Xbox One is using the same PC instruction set unlike the PS3 that used something much more fragmented,

Custom CPU’s cause problems for developers because of needing to learn new instruction sets. Also the Radeon GPU in the PS4 is not off the shelf. They did say that it’s also customised and yes, will run DX11.1 (Hence the term next-gen AMD GPU). Embedded memory comes with a whole list of complications that’s too long to go in to. But yeah it does cut out a lot of overheads.
You are trying to nitpick and it’s not helping much. Both are rather evenly matched and
Oh and please stop saying that only the XboxOne will be supporting DX11.1. DX11.1 is part of the nextgen fight and both will be supporting it. Rather stick to the points that actually have a valid argument behind it.

Hahaha… they named the thing after me 😛
I’m actualy sitting on the fence here but I do believe that gamers and journo’s are jumping to conclusions too early. Price of the console will also play a huge factor.

Marketing 101 ~ Ensure you market your product around your client’s needs and price will not be a big factor in the final decision.
It’s when you are unsure about your product or how it compete against that of your rivals that price becomes the focus point. That’s not to say that price isn’t important but if Sony charges say $600 and MS say $500, I still feel a lot of people will rather go for Sony than MS because of the used games scenario, etc.

I wish I could say that still. I was on the fence last night, it looks like a great, nay, AMAZiNG entertainment system, but with today’s comments coming from MS themselves about how one cannot lend/borrow games, how you need to be online at least once a day (my older boet spent most of his army life playing PS2 and you were not allowed an internet connection for that) I am rather disillusioned. I look forward to E3, but I fear it’s for the PS4 games, and not the rather poorly named (I get the whole ONE thing) Xbox One… 🙁

It’s going to come down to the games. I’m hooked on Forza 4. GT5 failed to impress me on PS3 but since I own a PS3, I’ll be likely playing PS3 exclusives until the PS4 or the Xbox One gets a price drop. There’s also the niggling factor of the PS controller but that’s just personal preference.

MS used a custom IBM Power PC CPU in the Xbox 360 and that worked out well. You’ve got to know your hardware before you enter the market unlike the PS3 that came in with the mighty Cell CPU that was not only detrimental to game development but also to Sony themselves. I shall wait until E3 to see what’s going to be shown off. Specs only show that much. Seeing is believing.

I’m a PC player but the last time I checked PS3 had more exclusives. I don’t think it was detrimental.

It seems to me that whenever Xbox DID get an original they shared it with Sony. Case in point Ninja Gaiden. IT annoyed me no end that Sony got “our” games and Sony didn’t share the likes of God of War. Xbx I will not be getting, maybe… maybe a ps4 or even a ps3, but I think I’ll stick to PC (and where games look/play better anyway) where I’m used to being shafted 🙂

If the presentation of the Xbox One wasn’t enough of an indication that Microsoft doesn’t care about it as much as they use to, then I don’t what will prove that. Sorry but, Microsoft has also been poisoned by greed and selfishness. May they both burn for their carelessness.

Yo Darryn you forgot to mention Xbox One gotta pay for used games and basically needs internet connection all the time, and even those of you who have uncapped adsl think about the bigger picture there in the States their internet speeds are WWWWAAAYYY faster than ours, you gonna need one helll of a good speed I think 4mb basic to do even do half of what they showed. Thats just my 5 cents and GDDR5 will kick GDDR3s ass for the record, and 3 os is gonna cause headaches for devs but I do like the idea of the voice and the new kinect looks awesom which I will miss when I get my PS4 but i guess who needs kinect when you get Sony exculsives. Plus added Performance gonna help. I love my 360 but seems like I am going back to my old ways with Sony.
