FFD: Are the new consoles making PCs more appealing?

There are five major advantages when it comes to gaming on a console. Firstly, consoles are a lot cheaper than going out and buying a new PC. They offer a fantastic price to performance ratio, offering better visuals than you’d get from similarly priced PC hardware. With consoles, you pop the game in, and it plays. No installs, no fussing with patches and nonsense. You get to sit on your couch and play, on a large TV with a confortable controller.  And most importantly everything just works. Only hardly any of that is true, or exclusive to consoles anymore.

Let’s look at the first points, the price and price-to-performance ratio . A brand new shiny PS4 will cost you, with the current RRP, just shy of R6800. If you don’t already have a functional PC, then yes, buying a brand new PC with all of its necessary periphery will cost you more than that. You could, however, build a perfectly capable PC that outperforms the PS4 in games like Battlefield 4 for the same amount of money.

On to the next. With both of the new “next gen” consoles, games have to be installed before you can play them, removing one of the very things that made consoles awesome in the first place. Yes, on the PS4 the install time is hardly noticeable, and the game continues to install in the background once it’s playable – but on the One some games take over half an hour before you get to shoot at stuff.

As for sitting on the couch and playing, pretty much any capable PC has an HDMI out, and will happily hook up to your TV. There are innumerable options to allow for controllers to be used, and Steam’s Big Picture mode even gives the PC a console-like interface for managing and launching games. On top of that, Steam’s new in-home streaming means I don’t even have to move my PC to the TV; I can stream my games from my more powerful desktop to my weaker, TV-connected laptop and play the library of games installed on the more powerful system.

And lastly, no..everything doesn’t just work. As we’ve seen, the new consoles need to be hard-reset on the odd occasion, with huge, gigabyte-sized patches getting in the way of everything.

Consoles, it seems, are becoming more like PC’s, while PC’s become more like consoles. Which has struck the better middle ground? Tell us! are you eyeing out a PS4, but thinking it makes a PC upgrade look like a better deal? Has the price of the new consoles and their expensive games pushed you more towards playing on PC?

For now, while the consoles are still expensive, yes, a PC upgrade is very very tempting. A new PC though, no. I disagree that you can build a PC for R 6800 that outperforms a PS4. Even if it was possible, in a year or two the developers will only start extracting and properly using the power of the consoles, as per each generation.

Hmmm, but when you say that it also highlights that as a PC user you do need alot more “Techie” knowledge, personally I’m quite up-to-date on most tech but I would know the first thing about getting and installing Ubuntu or the likes.

As a console user…. well, other than the initial networking setup any kid can figure most of that stuff out. The UI is very user friendly compared to the equivalent PC setup.

I agree that for R6800.00 it is definitely possible to make a rig that can outperform a PS4, software can be gotten hold of for free too, although gaming on ubuntu is tricky, its possible… But lets face facts here. Consoles don’t make PC’s more appealing, PC’s are just naturally more alluring. consoles are the dirty peasants of the gaming world 🙂

It’s dumb to argue that a screen is somehow an added expesnse when working out the price of a PC, it should be included in the price like the cost of a HDTV should be included in the price of a next gen console.

I can’t see why. You don’t have to buy a TV when you buy a console, since you already own one. If you don’t have a PC I’m 99% sure there will be no monitor in you home, thus you actually do need to buy one.

You’re assuming of course that everyone owns a TV. Also a TV requires that you rent the TV every year an additional cost that does need to be factored in.

        • Spathi

          March 14, 2014 at 10:56

The counter argument is that most people already have at least one TV in their home to use for, uhm, a TV, while a screens are almost always associated with PC gaming (consoles also though)

I’m not disagreeing with your sentiment though, but you still can’t build a R 6800 PC, with peripherals and software, excluding a screen, that can outperform the PS4.

Yeah, if you already own a PC and have the Keyboard, mouse and screen then you just need to upgrade the box.

Not to mention you already have the power supply, chasis, optical drives and hard drives.

That leaves just the MOBO, CPU, RAM and GFX to upgrade.

One doesn’t need a 6K graphics card to outperform the PS4. If you spend:

        R2500 – GFX
        R2000 – CPU
        R1500 – MOBO
        R800 – RAM

There is your R6800 PC upgrade and it will be stronger than the PS4.

And yes I don’t count screen, keyboard and mouse because you already have that.

Just like a console owner doesn’t count his TV because he already has one (Console gamers have to buy extra controllers though coz the old ones don’t work. At least the keyboard and mouse will always work on any new pc)

Yes I am. But I am going for a future proof mobo here and making the point that one can spend wisely to build a stable rig.

One can spend R800 – R1000 on a mobo and put the extra R500 – R700 in to upping your graphics card to a super-clocked mid range or so.

That’s the beauty of it. You can always build a rig around any budget and when you are already a PC owner that budget allows for a lot of playing

          • Tarisma

            March 14, 2014 at 11:16

True. My logic is that my MoBo is so paired with my CPU I treat them as 1 unit when 1 goes so does the other.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            March 14, 2014 at 11:18

Fair enough and what people seem to forget is that the mobo and CPU are the 2 parts that last the longest performance wise. I high range CPU can last 8 years easy.

            March 14, 2014 at 11:45

Very easily, its usually RAM, HDD and Graphics Card tech that just escalates, forcing you into a new CPU and Mobo upgrade due to needing the new slots.

GFX card slots not so much. Last change was AGP to PCI-E. That was 10 years or so ago.

RAM is linked to your CPU. So as long as your CPU can keep it, so can the RAM (Even if it means maybe putting in a bit more at some point).

My previous machine was an AMD Athlon64 (Single core) with DDR2. It lasted like 8 or so years and I had to up my GFX card once or twice. But the first time was a fried card (or at least bricked. Stupid firmware update) and the 2nd was for performance because I wanted to run on high. Not medium to low anymore lol.

          • ToshZA

            March 14, 2014 at 12:03

PCIe has gone through 3 iterations now. PCIe 1.0 is not as fast as PCIe 3.0 (the current iteration). This is in the last 9 years. I don’t think PCIe 3.0 cards can run in version 1, while they are compatible with 2. You won’t get the performance you expect though out of the older slot. Ram on the other hand is going DDR4 very soon, and when it does, DDR3 will stop being mass produced and start costing more. This escalates as time goes on, so in say 3 or 4 years from now, DDR3 will be more expensive (inflation and exchange rate considered static for this comparison) than it is now, and availability will be much lower. This has happened to me twice already. CPU used to increase significantly in power over time as well, but right now an i7 (3k and 4k series) is still far more power than you need for any game.

        • Spathi

          March 14, 2014 at 11:23

It may be stronger, but it won’t perform as well. Have a look at a games like TLOU or Halo 4 and how good it looks on 8 or 9 year old hardware. Developers extract much more performance from consoles over their lifetime.

Also, RAM prices have gone up quite a bit, think R 800 is a bit low!

Finally, you have detailed an upgrade, not a new PC. You can leave the screen but still need Windows, a mouse. keyboard, PSU (decent one), and optical drive (blu-ray player).

As long as you have a decent PSU you don’t need to upgrade it.

Ram: R800 can get you a 2x2GB DDR3 paired ram (Yes 4GB is enough because that’s what I run and still my PC doesn’t bottom out because of RAM)

Windows you should already have from your previous build. Contrary to popular belief microsoft support gladly allow you to re-use your licence key on a different machine if your old one is gone for whatever reason.

The optical drive one should already have (Blu-ray or otherwise. It’s been out for ages. Chances are slim pc owners haven’t already put in a proper optical drive ages ago)

You don’t need a mouse and keyboard as you already have one.

If you are talking about brand new PC from scratch then you can add in:
            R2000 for a 22inch screen
R800 for a reasonably ok mouse and keyboard combo (one can go far cheaper)
            R1000 for a PSU
            R800 blu-ray optical drive
            R1200 – windows 7 premium

That ups your price by an additional R5800 if you need to buy a screen as well.

now for a brand new Console: Now a 32″ TV is about R2400 (if you like Telefunken which has terribad quality).
Plus whatever it costs for at least 1 extra controller (Consolers help me out on a price here?

But even without the extra controller (Forever alone gamer) the price gap is R3400.

That seems a lot, but a console game is what nowadays? R700?

            PC games cost around R400 – R500.

Let’s take the R500 mark. That’s R200 difference. To make up that deficit one would need to buy 17 games at full retail release price on PC to make up the differance. However, with things like steam sales and things like that, one would need far less game purchases to make up that gap.

PS: It will perform just as well as a PS4. 60FPS is 60FPS. There are no shades of 60FPS.

          • JasonDK

            March 14, 2014 at 11:49

Not to mention the fact that if your PC does start to show it’s age, one might be tempted to increase multipliers and clock speeds to squeeze the bit of performance out of your machine, assuming that by this time it’s long past warranty.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            March 14, 2014 at 11:50

Very good point. Marginal overclocking can overcome a few hiccups as well with aged performance

          • Spathi

            March 14, 2014 at 11:51

Okay now we are getting somewhere 😀

The problem then comes in with the following:

In 5 years, an upgrade (probably only a GPU) will be necessary because developers get lazy and don’t optimize the PC ports, or does not take into account older PCs. With consoles, the developers have no choice, they must optimize and you can’t upgrade your console (if it still works :D).

Secondly, PSN+ not only gives you “free” games, it also gives you loads of discounts, just like steam. Even if you don’t have PSN+, you still get discounts. Also on that point, when you take the 2nd hand worth of a games (lets make it 50% of the new price), console games aren’t that expensive.

As per my comment elsewhere in this blob post, I currently believe the new gen consoles are not attractive, but in 2 or 3 years, when a PS4 sets you back *only* R 4500-00 (if Zuma shuts his mouth), then it becomes a real issue.

PS: A new controller is R 1000, crazy I know.

          • ToshZA

            March 14, 2014 at 12:05

Here’s the counter to that first bit, with games having to be optimised in a few years for consoles, who’s hardware is already being outperformed by pc’s, then why would you need to upgrade your graphics card for anything other than PC exclusives? You could literally keep the same card, and lower one or 2 settings per year to keep the same, buttery smooth 60fps performance over a console’s entire lifespan. Provided you don’t buy a lower end P.O.S. graphics card. Middle range is plenty though, in the R3k region, once off.

          • Spathi

            March 14, 2014 at 12:17

PC games just don’t get optimised for older hardware. The minimum requirements for Dark Souls 2 is a HD5870 (I suspect this may be a mistake though), and it is a PS3 game.

GTA 4 was the same. It ran really bad on mid-range PCs when it was first released.

            March 14, 2014 at 12:15

            R1000 for a controller!?!?!? Yikes.

            Ok moving rrright along.

That’s the thing, they do still optimise. 3 years down the road my R2300 GFX card is still running high graphics. in another 2 it may be medium, but the base quality capabilities are the same. I don’t HAVE to up my gfx card every 5 years. I only need that IF I want ultra all the time. In 5 years time ultra on PC will be far beyond what console is capable of (not dissing, just pointing out that PC naturally progresses faster due to its scalability) and while I won’t be able to run those new games at ultra I will be doing so at medium which will still look at least as good as the console.

In the end it really all works out roughly the same actually. Both are pretty even in costs if you think about it

i did the math on this, and i can’t say i agree with you. Also considering an upgrade, so same circumstance as you, except that i need a new PSU because my current one is a 480W and i think i need something more for the new setup.

What CPU are you looking at for R2000? I chose top of the range i5 (not the K one, the one below that), that was closer to 3K.

What GPU? I was deciding between the R9 and the 760GTX, both easily over R3K.

          RAM – 16GB – R1800-R2000

I feel that the spec i was looking at puts me relatively close to PS4 territory in the long run. But definitely more than R6800.

PC does offer more value for money. I have a decent PC but rarely game on it these days!???? Guess I got sick of having to download this and that extra for every game to run, whereas consoles are plug & play basically! Also to be honest, the move from mouse and keyboard was frustrating at first but now I really prefer my controller! The console exclusives were also a big factor but we’re seeing less and less of this with more “exclusives” also launching on PC! Core gamers with budget constraints should definitely go for PC though in my opinion!

I had a funny problem with The Witcher 2. The frames “skipped”, like it was only rendering every 2nd frame. I have a 550ti (old card I know) so it wasn’t some obscure mobile card or something. Can’t exactly remember what I did to fix it (something to do with the pre-rendering of frames), but things like that can be irritating on PCs. This happened end of last year, so I had all the available patches and fixes installed.

Use D3DOverdrive to fix frame skip issues. I have the same card as you and it happily runs BF3 at high with 4xAA but only with D3DOverdriver. It does not overclock your card to achieve this.

Not when PS1 and two PS2 was still in the market. There were way to many games exclusive to those consoles. Steam wasn’t even around back then if memory servers.

Nut now that you can have your PC in the living room and use Steam big picture and Netflix. The new consoles are a bit meh, Especially as most of the overseas features aren’t available to us.

I believe I’ll stick with PC for at least 2 or 3 years and wait for the PS4 to build up a library of exclusives. As of now, the games are hella expansive. Walked into CNA and checked out the price tag on BF4 for PS4 and it didn’t even fit on the box. Pfff, I love consoles but dayam, that’s too expensive.

There are two reasons Im considering buying a console:
1 – Playing horizontally is quite fun
          2 – Exclusives
Then there are numurous reasons against it:
          1 – I dont own a TV
          2 – I dont have R6000
3 – I cant justify paying R300 for a game on special when I can get it on Steam for R50, not to mention new games.
4 – FPS games will always be better with KB+M

That horizontal thing is easily done on a PC nowadays with controllers and Steam’s Big Picture. I just need the controller and I’m set for exactly that.

Exclusives are the only reason for me to ever buy another console. And right now there aren’t enough to justify that insane price tag.

In all seriousness though, I worry about that too. Don’t you think they are being a little too ambitious?

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            March 14, 2014 at 11:21

I think they’re being VERY ambitious. In a way it’s good, because they clearly want to create something mindblowing, but I always remember Peter Molyneux and Lionhead. They had the financial and technical backing of Microsoft, and regardless of what Peter wanted to do with Fable, it all boiled down to the team having bitten off more than they could chew.

I’ll remain cautiously optimistic with Star Citizen. I hope they deliver, but to be honest, I’ve been following gaming for a decent amount of years, and I’m yet to see someone deliver on grandiose claims.

That’s why I made fun of “teh Cloudz”, Kinect, the Ouya, and even lately the whole VR fad.

I’ll be honest as well, I use it to troll, but my hype and expectations for it are low. I’m a bit more pessimistic in that I do think it’ll fail. I think it’s now just too big for its boots, and all this hype is only going to damage it in the long run.

To be honest, I’d rather fork out 6K to upgrade my existing PC which will then last as long as the consoles will.

Now before anyone says “Oh but PC has to be upgraded to keep up” let me just point out that point is only valid when you want to always run PC games at high-ultra.

My PC can run games at a specific quality right now at 60FPS. That means in 5 years time my PC can still do the same quality at 60FPS. Yes, that quality might “medium” on graphics settings by then, but the fact still stands I will have the same graphical quality for 5 years and more.

By the time my PC can no longer play games at respectable frame rates because the quality has skyrocketed so much then the next-next gen consoles will also be coming out (Remember they are shortening the console expected life span to around 6-7 years if I recall?)

My PC is already almost 3 years old. I have not upgraded a thing and it is still running games on high. I can no longer do ultra sure, but still high at 50-60FPS.

Ultra settings are achieved very easily when I pop my resolution down to 720. Then my PC runs ultra settings, even in BF4, just fine.

So yeah, in short, I’d rather spend 6k and upgrade my PC with a monster GFX card than get a console which, to date, has underperformed and under delivered.

Star Citizen is one big example, but there are literally hundreds of indies that are ported to consoles, but native to PC, and quite frankly Indies are what keep me gaming, not the poorly made, bug-ridden AAA titles of late.

They’re also a fraction of the price of even a PC AAA title. I’m sorry, but your “port” argument is old and not really relevant any more. Some examples exist, but none from this generation, where this entire console thing has become a huge debate.

Dark Souls is an Indie. Torchlight is an indie. Indie does not mean platformer. And I hate to say it man, but there are loads of really amazing, unique and fun games out there in the indie scene. Reus is one recent example, I’ve had it for quite a while, but I introduced it to a friend. Such a simple concept, but damn it gets tough, and it keeps you coming back for another session.

Oh, wait. I played Torchlight II, was diverting for a few hours. Very well put together.

My time is also becoming more and more limited, so a game must really grab me. for me to play.

Well have a look around, you’ll definitely find something for you. Check reviews, check what your friends are playing. There’s a world of gaming out there that’s currently much more entertaining than AAA titles. A lot of these games can be played in small sessions too, FTL, Reus, Loadout – three examples that I personally play when I have an hour or less.

Then my question to you is this: 20 hours for an R800 game, or 20 hours for a R150 game, each made for the platform of choice?

You make a good point Geoff.

It seems that most everything that attracted me to the console in the first place is being eroded by the new consoles.

I want to switch on and play. I want a dedicated device connected to my TV to use a dvd player and all that. I do not want a PC or a laptop in the TV room.

Having said all that, I am thinking about (and this is new) getting a good PC, no screen and whatever, and leaving it in the TV room, plugged in and running. Remote controls and stuff can be sourced and sorted, no keyboard, no mouse (edit – maybe a wireless mouse?), use a controller and play games like that. Remote control for DVD’s.

AND no more content format trouble for my media, any format, any time cause the PC has the codecs I need.

I had that for a long time before I moved to a place big enough to afford my pc its own space. And it was pretty damn nice. Now what’s happened is that my tv never gets used anymore, since both myself and my girlfriend game on pc’s.

I have a study, with a PC and loads of bookshelves and stuff. That must remain as a work area, for sure.

But to have a PC in the TV room……. not what I want BUT I might just do it.

Lucky we have a separate lounge and stuff for guests, so I suppose what goes in the TV room is our business.

I game alone, when wife and baby are sleeping. Never, ever during the day, when wife is lurking. So it is my comfort for gaming I need to look out for AND the wife and I watching our TV series and movies.

Hmm, DSTV video stream for the stuff we miss, sort of like a PVR, can be played on PC direct to big screen. Another thought

    PC.
    1. Customizable
    2. Decent gear can be had for cheap as tech evolves.
    3. Games are cheap
    4. HD without controversy
    5. Controller can be plugged in
    6. KB/M combo usually better
    7. Unless a crappy EA port (Dead Space 3) , PC version usually better than Console version
    8. Mods
    9. Indie games more readily available
    10. Steam
    11. No subs needed for system to work as intended.

    Console
    1. Cheaper hardware … sort of
    2. You can sit on a couch (not really out of the realm of a pc but yeah)

It doesn’t make a difference to me. My life is not changed by playing or not playing some platform exclusive game. I’ll play something else, and my enjoyment levels will most likely be identical to someone playing their exclusive. Sure, there are games I’d have liked to play, but so what, I played something else.

Sure you can build a PC that has more raw processing power than a PS4 for R6800 (just). However consoles have one thing going for them- optimisation. If the developers know what they are doing, they can squeeze much more out of a console than a PC. That is why you can play a game with incredible graphics such as The Last of Us on a computer with 256mb of memory, and an outdated card.
AMD’s mantle is supposed to fix this, but again, it is down to the developers.

The fact that no one has even mentioned the Steam Machine is probably proof that it’s not a great idea. Though maybe the price of the new consoles and their games will change that.
    Doubt it though.

For a price point perhaps. But holistically? i dont think so. Most folk are still petrified of PC’s. Cant blame them, there are endless combinations of issues and knowledge required to maintain one. Having all the extra options and settings is quite daunting for many. I dont think PC’s will ever beat consoles in the usability field ever. Sure, theres ultimately more bang for your buck with a pc, but consoles also have longeveity on their side. Not talking about upgrading hardware etc, Im talking about the physical unit. How many people still have their PS1’s and PS2’s. Probably quite a lot of you. Now that being said, offer the same premise to PC users. I’d be pretty shocked to find out if more than 30% of participants would still keep old hardware.

Fundamentally the whole comparison between PC vs Console is unfounded. Theyre not the same beast. Sooner people swallow that pill the better off we’ll all be.

You make a very good point. A lot of people don’t want pc’s because they’re don’t know much about software of hardware.

I think you forgot the most important point: Games.

How true is this statement: A game made totally and solely for a particular console tends to be better in every way than one that’s multi.

The case you could make is the following: The developers know what they’re working with, don’t need to adjust or make concessions for different or variable platforms and dont have uniformity of software and hardware. All of that fat is cut off so they can optimise for a particular and single console (think Infamous).

What I see here is valid, but I’ve played Skyrim (just an example, not saying its the best thing since sliced bread) on both PC and Console, and the PC version is vastly superior in every way, thanks to something called Mods. Mods happen on many, many games, but are PC exclusive. There are arguments for and against in many respects, but for me the biggest thing is price. Who the hell can afford nearly a grand for ONE game?

Assisted aiming and having to charge my wireless controller will keep me away (Yes I have a wire on my mouse and keyboard for pretty much the same reason) I have just spent R5300 to upgrade my existing rig and next month I will drop a bit more to come out to close to the R6800 mark. Thats a cpu, mobo, ram and then the gpu next month.

Honestly, I’ve always been a PC gamer for most of my life. All of the games I’ve been able to play on the XBox 360 I got a while back are just console exclusives and random indie games that seemed worthwhile. Everything else went to my PC, because I could get it cheaper there. Couple that with Steam sales, Humble Bundles, all the indie love and the 360 controller adapter for PC, I don’t see a reason for me to get another console. For me, at least. I can understand the allure of a console to someone who’s not as… devout to PC gaming as I am. But yeah. Choose as you feel fits you. I’m just glad most of the games I want to play drop on PC as well as other platforms.
