Disappointment

The eighth generation of consoles is in full swing, with nearly over 30 million new gen consoles (Combined PlayStation 4, Xbox One and yes, Wii U) in people’s homes. It’s meant to be an era that ushers in a revolution in games – with games looking better, playing better and just being better than they’ve been. The new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, built on what’s essentially PC architecture, were meant to even elevate PC games. That hasn’t happened. Instead, there’s just been nothing but negativity and disappointment.

Right from the onset, the great big launch games were mostly middling. Killzone Shadowfall was good…but not great. Knack was decent (and terribly underrated), but critically panned. Battlefield 4 was essentially broken at launch, and Call of duty: Ghosts was just rubbish. the Xbox One’s launch titles weren’t great either; Dead Rising 3 was ok, Forza 5 was good, but the much heralded Ryse was for many, a huge disappointment. Even games that were delayed from the console launch, ones that were supposed to be banners for the next generation, have been disappointing; games like Watch dogs, and DriveClub. Destiny was not the second coming.

In fact, I’m not sure there’s a single game yet that’s really made it so that next-gen adoption is really necessary. Worse than that though, is the fact that this gen has been characterised by things just not working. Just about every great big game is being released in a state unfit for release, as if the public – the consumer – exists as beta testers and quality assurance. Driveclub was released without working servers – making it essentially useless. The latest game to suffer from being essentially broken is of course, Assassin’s Creed Unity  – though just last week Call of Duty’s online was (and still is) a mess, as is Halo’s Masterchief collection.

Here’s somebody who agrees.

On top of that, PC games are still being hamstrung by shoddy console ports. Let’s not even mention that so few games are able to run at 1080p and 60fps.  There’s a great deal of anger and disappointment in this generation. Are you genuinely disappointed, or is this all just misdirected vitriol and negativity as run through an online echo chamber?

The Last of Us Remastered has ruined every other game. EVERYTHING.

I am so glad I got to put 200hours into that game. But now the way the 8TH gen is going I am actually thinking about getting out. I am having so much fun with the Vita jrpgs that the next gen does not come close.

The consoles are a bloated MESS.

I just bet my brother that if The Witcher 3 requires a day 1 patch, I will sell him my PS4 for R3000 with 3 games.

I’m with OVG on this. CD Projekt Red has proven over and over again to be reliable with this kind of stuff. The fact that they’re tight with the people from GOG also says a lot about how they feel about day-one patches and DRM.

As much as I like them their games aren’t perfect on release – although they’re perfectly playable. They released major updates for Witcher 1 & 2 with the enhanced editions which fixed a lot of issues – the level load times in Witcher 1 were… bad. BUT. they don’t screw you over & they’ve always been upfront about problems – which makes them a world ahead of the other guys.

          • Ryanza

            November 14, 2014 at 11:08

From what I understand. Those enhanced editions were just minor tweaks and farther optimization and added content.
            There was nothing game breaking.

            November 14, 2014 at 11:16

No there wasn’t game breaking stuff, I played the original releases through just fine. But like the level load times in Witcher 1, I could literally go to the kitchen, boil the kettle & make myself a cup of coffee, then go back & it would still be loading. I used to sit with a book next to me & read while I switched between levels. It was that bad – but they acknowledged it and fixed it, and threw in a whole bunch of stuff to boot – which earned them my respect.

The Witcher 2 retail was released with DRM. It was found that the DRM was coursing a massive hit to frames. The developers listened to the outcry and patched out the DRM quickly. Within days, I think.

The Witcher 3 game should be finished already and they just busy with optimization. So there shouldn’t be a patch but looking at the gaming industry, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a day 1 patch.

And then there is the day 1 DLC. There might be a patch for something related to those 16 DLC’s. I wouldn’t be surprised.

News of a day 1 patch for The Witcher 3 will unset a lot of people.

On the XboxOne side, the Master Chief Collection has been incredible, setting a new benchmark in how to do Remastered versions of games, Sunset Overdrive is truly amazing, I’ve absolutely loved Destiny, Ryse I thought was incredible (I know I’m in the minority, but it was definitely better than God of War 3), and it is still the first year. Compared to the first year on the 360 or PS3 and I’m not even slightly worried that this generation is really starting off while.

Lets you start playing about 2 hours in then downloads the rest in the background. Most of that patch is for Nightfall and Multiplayer methinks because all 4 titles were playable (SP only) the same day I purchased it.

Nightfall isn’t on the disk or downloaded, it is streamed when you watch it. The download is pretty much for online. You can’t even play the campaign co-op online until the download is finished, neither can you play any multi-player online.

Resogun makes having the WS4 (Waitstation 4) essential for me and now Halo on the UBone (Update Box).

Here are my games that are totally worth playing on the current gen and yes, it is a very short list.
    Resogun
    Forza 5
    The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
    Halo MCC

I don’t think the console’s have been disappointing. It’s the games with the sheer amount of updates, patches and bugs have been disappointing. It’s partly the reason I don’t see a reason to get an XBox One. There isn’t anything on it yet that makes me want to buy it.
The PS4 I got as a bday present is awesome but the games have been hugely disappointing. I’m hoping that games like Dying Light, The Division, Evolve, Witcher 3 and DA will make a difference.

I suppose Sony is trying something different like the last patch having the USB MP3 player instead of allowing users to just play music straight from the HDD itself.
This hasn’t really effected me since I have serious OCD and it would drive me nuts to have music and movies on my PS4.

As a pure gaming console the PS4 is fine, yeah. Many people used their PS3 as an entertainment system though – so for a lot of people it was (and still is) a big deal.

I feel sorry for them, but you know. PC for media/browsing/work/games/everything, console for games. Works fine for me 🙂

Yeah I’m really looking forward to that as well – but I’ll be picking it up for PC as I don’t have a new gen console just yet. Either way, I think DA:I will be the game people have been hoping for.

yes but isn’t 1080p part of the eye candy? My point is the ps4/bone hardware are suppose to easily handle it, if you compare it to pc’s of 5 years ago. Even some(very few) ps3 games were able to do it.
Personally I don’t give a damn about 1080p or 60fps. I just want a fun game that works. If it looks pretty it’s a bonus.

Well you can’t compare games from 5 years ago to games now. Of such old games will easily be able to be played at 1080p 60fps on the PS4/Xbone and even a low-end PC. But you must remember that graphics WILL increase and so will the horsepower required to push those games. And there is no PS3 game that did 1080p 60fps except for Wipeout and even then, that featured a dynamic resolution.

But what you saw going from PS1 to PS2 and PS2 to XBOX360/PS3, that wasn’t a good enough reason to wait because even the first titles on the newer generation was light years beyond anything the previous gen could do.

New consoles is only catching up to where PC’s were years ago. New consoles are not even close to where PC’s were a year ago. So looking at 5 years down the line. Not looking good.

Then there is day 1 patches, DLC, micro transactions, online only, server based single player, large patches, installs, DRM looming, ect. New consoles have moved away from what a console was meant to be. Put a disc in and play and take your console where ever you go. Now the consoles can’t leave the internet plug.

Last gen was known for sequels. This gen let’s hope for new games. But looking at Ubisoft and EA and Call of Duty and a new Candy Crush game. This gen of consoles might be known as the gaming fucked up years.

I am disappointment but I’m still playing, the problem is that games can be sold without any accountability for being sold broken or with bugs. There is no consumer protection against this. That’s the biggest problem with gaming in my books the other being blatant monetization thorugh microtransactions and deliberately pulling content out of games to be sold as DLC later.

I get where you are coming from, but I don’t think PS3 was Next gen enough when it was released either. I think PS3 only showed it’s full potential in it’s last year.

Lets just say I was never expecting Next Gen to be on par with current gen PCs, I would assume we should also be taking the costs into account, you can’t have new console at High-end Master Race prices.

Regarding “Not Next” enough, it’s a fair assessment, but I believe that is the game developers fault wrt optimization and utilizing the full potential of the hardware, I think it’s common knowledge that alot of the next gen games have been rushed.

And also I think this is the first gen that hardware capability is the limiting factor year one. Think we will some increase but nothing like the evolution we have seen in previous gen.

I’m not disappointed, I’m pissed – because of constant lying from manufacturers & publishers. They’ve cross the line between advertising, and all the expected exaggeration that comes with that, and blatant bullshit. And when they get called on it they blame you, the customer. It’s all your fault. Fuck them.

Not so much for myself, because as a PC gamer we don’t have generations & this is just more of the same shit we’ve been dealing with for years now that’s been snowballing along merrily.

I’m pissed for my console brethren who have to deal with all this crap. The blame starts at the console manufacturers – I remember all the statements about the new gen being more powerful than a current mid range PC, bullshit they’re not. I remember all the “everything 1080p & 60fps”, bullshit they’re not. They hyped & hyped & hyped and fucked everyone by NOT DELIVERING. The odd exception doesn’t make their hype true, so don’t even waste my time mentioning it. And don’t try the “but they’re fixing it now” excuse either – it should have been that way from the start.

Then you get the publishers like EA & Ubi who release broken crap months before it’s ready because FUCK THE CUSTOMERS we have to meet revenue deadlines & we can fix it later. The only thing I will give them when it comes to their releases on new consoles is that they had to start developing these titles years ago, and they had to work with what the console manufacturers told them the consoles would be able to do. But that doesn’t excuse them for all the broken crap they’re releasing. People expect bugs, they understand that, they DON’T expect the game to be a piece of crap without a 10GB patch on day one. And that’s not even getting into the whole DLC & mictrotransaction bullshit that’s being crammed down everyone’s throat – that would be less of an issue if the stuff they released initially wasn’t FUCKED UP from the start. Get it through your thick skulls that you need customers, and a lot of them, to buy your games & they’re the ones you need to please – your shareholders don’t cut it.

You can’t promise someone the moon, give them a pet rock, then wonder why they’re not happy. No matter how cool the pet rock is, IT’S BECAUSE IT’S A PET ROCK, NOT THE MOON THEY WERE PROMISED. And trying to spin it with corporate bullshit is the worst, stupidest thing you can do.

I think the day one cash grab is only going to last so long, before everyone has been burned one too many a time.

I think reviewers should protect consumers. Penalize games for day 1 incentives such as exclusive content and for asking money to unlock SP content in a paid for game. Mark them down 10% points for this and send a clear message.

How many videos is there now of FC4. And pre order now and you get XYZ game content. This is unacceptable. Yes, give something like a digital art book, or soundtrack. But all content must be available.

I am so hyped to get DA:I, even considering getting it on Xbox 360 until the funds are there for a new console (and new TV), but I feel I have to wait for the expected glitches and patches and “finished before the game was finished”-DLC to be bundled in the game…sad day for a gamer.

I have given this some thought the last couple of days with all the issues.

So to answer the question – YES I am disappointed. Massively so.

I do not blame the consoles themselves though – we were all ready for an upgrade. But it is very clear that none of the developers around, specifically those at the big publishers (including Microsoft and Sony), have been prepared for this gen.

Every single game being released is just about broken or requires a patch the size of the main game just about.

Unfortunately though us gamers are the ones paying the price. And it feels like the publishers know full well they can get away with it.

    – FIFA 15 is the same fucking game as FIFA 14 => and apparently online is a mess.

    – AC Unity = just a broken mess by all accounts; not to mention microtransactions in a R800 game!

    – Destiny = mostly fine online but not much there to it.

    – COD AW = broken online.

    – Watchdogs = massively over-hyped but basically a copy and paste template of AC.

    – Halo = online issues; and 15GB patch.

    – Driveclub = well too many to mention for what is a SOCIAL GAME…how the fuck do you mess that up when its all you have been talking about!!!

Personally it is so disheartening how the execs have just steamrolled the industry and are out to grab as much as possible. And we the gamers are just lapping it up. I get disappointed by the general air of negativity that happens in forums, but when you start to list the games with issues, no wonder everyone has had enough.

I hope the industry implodes BIG TIME and soon, so that publishers start to realise we want games that fucking work on day one with NO patches. I am tired of all the excuses. Test your games dammit before you release them – I am no longer going to be your guinea pig.

From now on I am not pre-ordering anything. I don’t even read many reviews, because I know what I like. I will and see the news for what the issues are and stay away until things simmer down.

As everyone says – only way to make publishers understand is indeed to vote with the wallet. But it is disappointing that I have to not buy a game because I just know it will be a mess at launch.

So to all gamers – start thinking about the next purchase more carefully. Imagine if everyone boycotted the next Ubisoft game (Far Cry 4 say)…that would send such a signal they wouldn’t dare release a shoddy mess like they did with AC Unity. My bet is Far Cry is going to have issues. And lets not even talk about Share Play thing – that working flawlessly? Hmmm we wait and see.

And we will leave DLC for another day! I hope CD Projeckt Red live up to their intentions and if true MAKE MILLIONS from Witcher 3 just so others can see how it should be done.

    Rant over for now…

Couldn’t agree more. So sad as we all enjoy our “AAA” experiences if you want to call it that. Some big-ass game with no brains sometimes is a lot of fun. It just needs to work.

Oh absolutely. Sometimes you need something with no story and only explosions. 😀

It seems the trend for AAA now is being the first three letters in “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH WHERE’S THE LUBE!?!?!”

I’ve honestly had better experiences the last few years with smaller titles & indies than I have with the supposedly “top tier” games. With a few exceptions they’re watered down & shallow for the most part. Thank god I stopped preordering or buying day one years ago, so by the time I eventually get the games they’re fixed or I’d be even more mad than I am now.

I don’t tend to go big on pre-ordering but there are some titles, like Halo I REALLY want. But yeah, play games 3 to 6 months later at their “true” release time.

Playing Borderlands (1) and its seamless. I cannot recall if they had issues to start but once all installed with a patch update, now runs flawless on 360.

I love my PS4 but the games arent as good as I would have thought, havent had a game that could keep me playing for days, would rather sit at my PC and play some random game, though I got Second Son yesterday and that seems quite good, oh and that play while you download crap dont really work, downloaded 5gb and played like 30 mins before it told me to download the rest, I mean it was downloading from yesterday morning and went up to 5gb and stopped and waited for me to play for it to start the rest of the download which is stupid, could have downloaded the whole game in that time.

These companies need to get their heads out their ass and look at what made games great in the past. Its as if they forgot how they got to be these big companies in the first place

Don’t think so, I think it is just a case of being spoilt.
Shadow of Mordor for example is a really good game and it looks great on PS4. To most normal people that is all that is required of their consoles.

As for the day one patching: that is simply a result of digital platforms. Which started with everyone’s lovechild: Steam on the masterace. Patches happen all the time with online PC gaming. It is a little unfair to say it only affects consoles.

Personally: DA:I will probably be my first foray into this generation. And I am pretty confident that Bioware will deliver a solid experience.

Good games will come. Just stop supporting the shit from Ubisoft and EA. Then it should all be fine. In other words stop spending your money on Ubisoft and EA and then they might change for the better to get your money.

The Witcher 3 is coming. That is where you should spend your money.

“Then you get the publishers like EA & Ubi who release broken crap months before it’s ready because FUCK THE CUSTOMERS we have to meet revenue deadlines & we can fix it later” I agree with you Alien I was a huge Creed fan from Brotherhood days (when online AC was fun and decent) the titles that followed well needless to say the multiplayer was horrendous, waited hours to get into a game on XBL with friends and when we did manage to get a game heavens forbid you disconnect as you would be unable to rejoin. I’m glad the community is finally up in arms together the developers have been getting away with this for a while.Raise the question with a UBI developer at a Local well know Con, what do you get a perky smile in response. lol. Lets hope this ends soon and we are all not left in the dark once again per the COD online scenario.

Can i say something? NINTENDO! Right? Guys? Can you remember a broken game ever on any of their platforms? From listening to these reactions my decision to buy a Wii-U for the family this Christmas seems a pretty good one

I agree. What makes it sad is some users still have no Internet connection in sections of our country where there simply is no land line or the land line has been stolen and “telkom” ( sperm-count if you’re English) refuses to replace it.
Now those gamers are stuck with broken games and not a hope in hell to fix them!

A 1 gig patch is insane on anything other than broadband and the costs of it!

Unfortunately gamers need to vote with their wallets and most seem to be voting in the continuation of this trend.

At least it seems ubisoft’s shares have taken the knock they deserve…

Both the ps4 and xbone should be cheaper too… Both companies have been transparent about the fact that they want to make money off hardware sales from day 1. Which was not so much the case in the past gens

Frankly it all just seems greed has driven them all to slay the goose that was lining their pockets with golden eggs for so long…

I really don’t feel sorry in the least bit for any of the companies that suffer because of this bs!

I’m disappointed as hell. But more than that I have become disillusioned and cynical… Every time a patch / update / upgrade / Improves user experience update comes along I wearily accept it kind of knowing that they’re going to fix one or two things and break ten others… On the console front it’s not like they’re developing for an open architecture like the Master Race that has to support multitudes of hardware, OS and software layers…

The console is a closed system so development should be relatively simpler than PC.

There’s just too much reliance by the devs these days on the ability to try to fix it after they’ve published it. What happened to testing properly? What happened to decent coding and making sure that your product was good enough to release and stand on its own…?

I’m disappointed because the hobby and gaming industry I have spent almost 30 years of my life enjoying is being overtaken by greedy, arrogant mega corporations who believe that treating their customers like crash test dummies is the new acceptable way of doing things…

Anybody got any suggestions for a new hobby for me? Because the way this is going EA and co are about to turn me into an ex-gamer…!

So many entitled glass half empty fucking cry babies!!! I for one am loving the new generation! if you spent less time worrying about what you don’t have and more time enjoying the plethora of good things this generation has already brought to us you might just start having some fucking fun! Oh and when did resolution and frames per second become more important than good old fashioned awesome games??

Of course, you would gobble up any wads of bs these greedy, lazy, mediocre corporations throw at you son. People like you are the things that are killing quality gaming. I recently played hotline miami 2 and had a better experience than playing the so called AAA titles on the so called next-gen consoles. Idiots these days think everything is about the online experience, that’s why lazy devs don’t bother with good stories or awesome gameplay anymore. Just microbullshit, dlc whoring and online pay to play for screeching casual whores. Most of the new devs don’t put their heart into games anymore. I don’t remember dealing as much with bugs, plagiarism, glitches, false advertising, 10 gb patches, bullshit, incomplete games and crashes on the past. I’ve been gaming since 1990 and am unimpressed.

Only 1 way to fix the problem…don’t pre order anything from said company, wait for reviews and user comments, then buy. Haven’t bought a Ubisoft title in years. Vote with your wallets, don’t support games that you know are unfinished or advertise DLC which was clearly left out of the game to be sold later.

Consoles are simply mid range pcs in which the hardware is dedicated to gaming.Games do get better as developers learn more but I don’t reckon it’s worth all the fuss. With a versatile tower hooked to your tv, there’s really no need for a console. One could argue about the games available but then that’s a self inflicted effect of people who purchase these consoles in the 1st place. The more you feed the beast, the hungrier it gets.
