The closer and closer we edge towards Computex next week, the more leaks start to trickle through the cracks regarding Nvidia and AMD’s latest technological beauties. Yesterday we got another look at the suspected R390x – the flagship card from the red team that will feature game changing High-Bandwidth Memory. Nvidia aren’t on that track just yet, but their 980Ti won’t be anything to scoff at.
And that’s probably going to be their big announcement next week, with a first look at the card surfacing online a full seven or so days beforehand. The 980Ti looks to be sticking with the same cooling that you’ll find on the Titan X, with the now famous black and silver colour scheme becoming a staple for the Nvidia brand. According to Videocardz (who managed to get their hands on it early), the 980Ti will sport the same 2-pin power connections as the Titan X, while also getting rid of the backplate. This is said to improve tri-SLI airflow – if you ever even get to that point. The outputs are identical to the Titan X too – with single DVI and HDMI ports, alongside three DisplayPorts.
In terms of performance, the 980Ti is expected to slot somewhere between the GTX 980 and Titan X – although that gap has been diminished in most recent titles already. The card should presumably come with a little more memory than the 980, feature higher clock speeds and subsequently cost a little more. I’m sure Nvidia will be generous with all the details next week.
But considering the standard GTX 980 already reaches around R10 000 locally, I shudder to think what this might cost.

The thing is AMD is going bonkers with HBM right now. It’s already confirmed that the “new” R9 300 series is a rebrand of the R9 200 with HBM. HBM is just a type of RAM, (that will affect 4k gaming at least) it’s one factor of many that affects the card but it’s the least important one. Core and shader counts, core efficiency, clock speed, amount of cache and ROPs are where the money is. And we all know Nvidia reigns king on those factors.

It’s only the 390x that’s getting HBM. Literally, just their top-end card. Everything else is just a rebrand of the 200 series.

Either way this is seriously not good for AMD. I support them to a point with their competitive pricing, but only on that because it keeps the Nvidia card pricing at bay.

I agree with you. I won’t buy AMD, purely because the tech isn’t as good as Nvidia’s. But without competition, us and our wallets are all screwed.

Lovely card, but my only gripe with these “reference cards” is the cooling, that single tunnel style fan just cant keep a card optimally cool.
But once MSI or EVGA takes a swing at it, it becomes a true monster.

Nvidia reference cards actually stay cool under load, but don’t expect to overclock it and still have a low breeze coming out of your Case. MSI, EVGA, ASUS cards are ALWAYS cooler than the reference. It’s like Toyota releasing a new Tazz and you hear there’s already a upgraded version of it with a spoiler and carbon hood. Now I want to play underground T-T

I think the reference cooler will keep it from warping XD. Also when the custom cooling comes in from MSI, ASUS, EVGA etc I’m sure they’ll back plate it.

I’m more of a performance guy than a looks guy when it comes to tech. Especially if it’s within my PC case but yeah people would agree with you the reference cooling block ugly.
