GTA V on PC is worth the wait

GTA V is finally coming to the PC next week. After delay upon delay, it’s finally happening. While some PC gamers have already decided to give it a skip, many others are chomping at the bit, eager for the game to go live. In fact, it’s already at the top of the Steam sales charts, just waiting for the 14th of April to tick by so it can be unlocked. And it may have been worth the wait.

For starters, it’s not a quick and dirty port of the console game, which is one of the reasons it’s taken so long.

“We made a commitment to having the core GTA team work alongside our specialist PC leads on every version of the game,” Phil Hooker, Director of Technology at Rockstar North told Techradar speaking about the delay. “Since the PS4 and Xbox One share similar architecture to the PC, we were using the same team for both new console and PC versions. So while PC development was happening more or less alongside the console versions from the very beginning, carefully managing each version in this way took a lot more time than if we had a completely separate team working on the game.”

They’ve put a lot of care in to the PC version, which launches not only with a working Online Heists mode, but quite a bit more. For Pc gamers, one of the most important things is that the game is immensely configurable, and incredible scalable. You might not think it’ll work on your PC, but it probably will.

“We have made an effort to bring new features to each version,” Klaas Schilstra, Director of Engineering at Rockstar North said. “For the PC version, using that additional time [from the delay] to implement all of the new configurable options so that players can really maximize the potential of their hardware.”

How configurable? Here’s a summary of the sort of options PC pundits will be able to tweak.

  • Video memory slider
  • Ignore suggested limits option
  • Options for screen type, aspect ratio and refresh rate.
  • DirectX Version Output monitor: 1-3
  • Anti-aliasing: FXAA, MSAA and Nvidia TXAA supported.
  • Pause game on focus loss.
  • Scaling bars for population density, population variety and distance scaling.
  • Texture quality: normal to very high.
  • Shader quality: normal to very high.
  • Shadow quality: normal to very high.
  • Reflection quality: normal to very high.
  • Reflection MSAA
  • Water quality: normal to very high.
  • Particles quality: normal to very high.
  • Grass quality: normal to very high.
  • Soft shadows options: softer, softest, AMD CHS, Nvidia PCSS
  • Post FX options: up to ultra.
  • Motion blur strength: scaling bar.
  • In-game depth of field effects: on/off.
  • Anisotropic filtering: up to x16 .
  • Ambient occlusion options.
  • Tesellation options.
  • Advanced graphics
  • Long shadows: on/off.
  • High resolution shadows: on/off.
  • High detail streaming while flying: on/off.
  • Extended distance scaling bar.
  • Extended shadow distance bar.
  • Benchmark testing.

The game will support higher frame rates than the console versions, along with ludicrous resolutions up to 4K. It even has 3D support, and with the new First-person perspective, I suspect it won’t be too long until somebody gets it working on the Oculus Rift.

GTA V PC Screens 2

GTA V on PC also comes with a rather robust video editor, so expect all manner of video shenanigans soon after the game’s release.

I love that trailer so much. The bit where Trevor is laying down the pain with the mini-gun, with the spent shell-casings pouring out the back? AWESOMESAUCE! Reminds me of the scene in the Matrix, from below the helicopter where Neo is hosing down the agents with the minigun, with the brass raining down in slow motion. Amazing piece of cinematography.

Those are the settings I’d expect to be able to adjust in a AAA game, how revolutionary. And then the “we did it for you!” bullshit. lol. Saying the heists our console brothers should’ve had over a year ago & only got recently will be in on day one, yay for our good fortune? I’m not drinking this industry’s bullshit kool-aid, they’d charge me rental on the glass if I even tried.

Funny how they’re not marketing the game’s story or game play to PC gamers, but its settings & resolutions. Why would that be? O_O

Maybe, maybe, one day Rockstar – but no way in hell day one. Get extra virtual cash if you pre-order? HAH, good one!

I’m not convinced if the developer that’s known for the worst ports in PC history tells me its a good port. Its like Zuma assuring me he isn’t using tax money to build Nkandla.

I guess you’ve not played a Ubisoft port before then?

I’d recommend you try Ghost Recon Future Soldier to see what I mean, only “recommend” in this context is pretty much exactly the opposite of what the word is supposed to mean…..

Yup I don’t buy Ubiturd games any more, fucked me good with Watchdogs. Not to mention the bullshit they spin about 900p just being a number and that 30fps is more cinematic.

And then there was Unity and The Order lol 😛 Nuff said …

I was a fan of GRAW, future soldier looked shit from the start 🙂

I feel you brother, the same here brother. You have to be real ass holes to surpass EA and Ubisoft did it without trying.

Then not to mention all their games running like shit and being average at best. I can rant all day at Ubiturd 🙂

Me too, but EA definitely takes first prise for being A class, turd wielding douches… Comparing Rockstar to them now makes Rockstar look like angels in comparison

I would still say Square Enix beats both for horrible ports.

Watch Dogs looked interesting, but in addition to my general dislike for ubisoft, something told me to hold on until the reviews came out. And oooooh boy am I glad I did that.

The Division? That looks like it could be stunning. I want so much for that to be as good as it looks. And I’ll even try to overlook that it’s by ubisoft, and I’ll have to deal with the execrable uplay store if I do get it.

But not a damn will I buy it at release, and if I do get it I’ll be cracking the shit out of the exe to not have to deal with uplay, that’s for damn sure……

The Division looks really good, but just the mere mention of Ubisoft sends shivers down my spine, a few examples: Ass hattens creed urinary was an absolute disgrace to all things holy in the gaming industry, Wart doge was so oversold that everyone bit into a belief of it being the actual “next gen” game everyone deserved, to land flat on it’s ass… No thanks, but just the affiliation with that stupid Uplay application… already boils my blood under my skin….

I was about to purchase KZ: Shadowfall when I saw this. Then I thought, I already 100 % the sp on the 360, why would I double-dip? I’d rather play a new game, even if it’s average at best. Well, the mind works in mysterious ways, because now I’m preloading this beast on my pc…

Ok, I see a lot of hate for Rockstar, which they earned fair and square, I mean who will forget the disappointing GTA IV port, I still bare the scars, but they learn from their mistakes very quickly, i.e. Max Payne 3 was an astonishing release on PC, also developed in parallel with the consoles and it was EPIC, what I like about this though is the movie editor, I’d love to see what people come up with, especially with the Online side of things…
