GTX 1070 benchmarks leak

The GTX 1080 might be stealing all the headlines for now with its impressive benchmark and real-world performance, but there’s a very big reason as to why the GTX 1070 isn’t out this week. Last generation the GTX 970 practically killed the GTX 980 out the gate, offering a much better price per performance ration that catapulted it into the hearts of PC gamers. If these benchmarks are anything to go by, the GTX 1070 is gearing to do the exact same thing.

It must be explicitly said, however, that these are just leaked benchmarks that Videocardz have somehow managed to run, so there’s a lot to be said about whether they can be replicated come June 10th. What they do show though is a clear message – that the GTX 1070 is in fact faster than both the Titan X and GTX 980Ti. The two fastest cards pre-Pascal are seemingly being made redundant, especially when you consider all the other benefits that Pascal brings to the table over performance gains.

GeForce-GTX-1070-3DMark-FireStrike-Performance

They’re a lot smaller than the 1080, and Videocardz does mention that the Founder’s Edition suffers from the same power and heating limitations as before. These synthetic tests aren’t always indicative of real-world performance too, but I suspect that will only mean that the gap will widen when real games are thrown into the mix. The GTX 1070 also managed to overclock beyond 2GHz on its core clock, as well a increase its memory bandwidth by 32GB/s with a bit of tweaking.

It’s not enough to stand up to the superior GDDR5X memory in the GTX 1080, but it does mean that the 8GB present will be faster than what the 980Ti and Titan X can produce. And all of this becomes nearly laughable when you consider the price, with the GTX 1070 aiming to retail for $380 with third-parties, and for $449 for the Founder’s Edition. That makes it less than half the price of a Titan X, and close to that when compared to the 980Ti.

So yes, the GTX 1070 is certainly looking like the more important Pascal card coming out over the next few weeks, and it’s certainly the one that will be scrutinised the most for upgrade viability. It’s out on June 10th, while the GTX 1080 launches this Friday.

I need a new card this year. I truly am hoping this will land between the R6000 – R7000 price range. Just can’t imagine paying more than that considering I need a new mobo, cpu, ram…. The fiance will already throw her veto at me for just thinking of this..

My wife told me that the only things I need to buy with my bonus this year is a new base for our bed (lol, don’t ask) as well as a new mattress for my daughter’s bed (jumping on bed, not my fault)

The rest is going STRAIGHT into the GPU fund, and after that, I’ll maybe have enough left for a mini-holiday

I have empathy. I remember 2012 December. My father in law got a 13th cheque AND a performance based 14th cheque that only certain people got at his firm.

I got…… nothing. I would LOVE a 13th cheque that I KNEW I was getting at the end of the year. That would, let us be honest, probably go straight into the home loan, but still, I would love it.

We bought a proper Wooden Bed a few years back. I see that thing lasting for many, many more years, it is solid wood, well made. A lot of our house is solid wood furniture, that I expect to outlive us. In fact, some of it is already 70 odd years old.

Yes, it was a bit of money, but over the years, it has paid for itself. My parents in law buy base sets and mattress. But then, every few years, you need a new one.

Yeah but the exchange rate has changed drastically since then. The 980 was around 9K when it launched here too for the same dollar price as the 1080. And that jumped by R5K

This is true, though I would expect local retailers to at least consider getting their foot in by taking a slight knock, after all, these seem to look like really good cards, pushing it close to 10k, doesn’t make it a bargain anymore…

That is just incredibly harsh. It does make me want to look at a PS4. But the fact that it does seem like console lives are getting shorter and shorter + the huge cost of games I can’t commit.

This may not be the correct method but it is an educated guess. According to the news it will Retail for $379** in US

        $379 x 15.76* (current R/$) +14% (VAT) + 18.74% (Average Import TAX) = R8075.06

        Then add a very optimistic 20-25% retailer profit^ and R9690.07 – R10 093.83 seems like a reasonable offer.

        * Rates at time of writing
**Asuming that SA buys the stock at $379 per unit. No idea what the wholesale price is
^ Realisticly this will be a much higher amount
        BUT

Assuming the Wholesale price is $250 – $280# then the cards could retail here at about R6600.00 – R7500.00

#Just a random guess and figures might be completely incorrect

          Well, as expected!

My advice, to someone I have never met and probably never will (and probably does not want my advice), is to sort out the priority stuff first, then discuss the hobbies, like gaming. You two must discuss this and get a resolution. I imagine right now, it is wedding, wedding, wedding and more wedding for your money resources and that should be ok too.

In my case, the gaming is part of what keeps me sane and we allocate a certain portion of the household monies to that. For example, when we bought the Xbox One, we decided together, after looking at the capabilities for home entertainment (and does it deliver!). We still decided together.

Man, I am preachy and so far out of line here. Sorry. Main point, money stuff disuss and do together, is my advice. That does not mean she gets to Veto every single gaming thing you want, nor can you Veto the new TV Cabinet after Vetoing the last three things she wanted to budget for. Compromise.

The gap between the 1080 and the 1070 though looks pretty unreasonable though! I would expect the 1070 to be at least touching the 20000 point mark – unless they are reserving that for something like a Ti version or for the inevitable overclocked editions!

I have been looking at Laptops and Laptop GPUs. The difference between, say, the GTX 950m and the GTX 960/5M is just massive. For a little more you get a massive leap, which is nice. Then the 970m and 980m is just better and better, but SO PRICEY

From the above it seems as if Nvidia is trying to stop the sort of price per Gb or terraflop maths people tend to do. Did they not get into trouble last year for releasing slowed down cards, not performing to the max of the hardware?
