At the beginning of the month Apple held their annual iPhone press conference, where both the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2 were revealed. As per usual with Apple, the devices all went on sale just a week later in major regions. South Africa still isn’t cool enough to crack that initial wave list, but every year the wait seems like it’s getting shorter. Nearly a month after the first release, both the Apple Watch Series 2 and iPhone 7 will arrive on local shores.
First up, the iPhone 7. It’s going to be available in iStores Stores countrywide on October 14th (two weeks from today), and will be accompanied by a hefty price. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cash prices are a little staggering, only offset but the cash-back offer the Apple Store features for your old iPhone. Should you be willing to part with it, Apple will knock off a few bucks on your iPhone 7 purchase – which really isn’t too bad.
Should you want to trade-in for a new iPhone 7, here’s what you can expect:
32GB | 128GB | 256GB | |
Cash price with no trade-in | R12,999 | R14,999 | R16,999 |
After trading in an iPhone 6s Plus* | R4,999 | R6,999 | R8,999 |
After trading in an iPhone 6s* | R5,999 | R7,999 | R9,999 |
After trading in an iPhone 6* | R7,999 | R9,999 | R11,999 |
If you’re eyeing out the beefier (and honestly superior) iPhone 7 Plus, things get a little more expensive:
32GB | 128GB | 256GB | |
Cash price with no trade-in | R15,499 | R17,499 | R19,499 |
After trading in an iPhone 6s Plus* | R7,499 | R9,499 | R11,499 |
After trading in an iPhone 6s* | R8,499 | R10,499 | R12,499 |
After trading in an iPhone 6 Plus* | R9,499 | R11,499 | R13,499 |
Along with the iPhone 7, the Apple Watch will be getting a full refresh on October 14th as well. Series 2 is Apple’s newest device, equipped with a faster processor, water resistance and in-built GPS. The Series 1 features all the same insides as Series 2, but omits the water resistant tech and GPS. It’s replacing the original Apple Watch, and both will come with their own trade-in deals too.
38mm Apple Watch Sport | Up to R2 000 back |
42mm Apple Watch Sport | Up to R2 500 back |
And if you’re looking to just pay some cold hard cash:
Apple Watch Series 2 | 38mm Aluminium | From R6 899 |
42mm Aluminium | From R7 499
38mm Stainless Steel | From R9 999
42mm Stainless Steel | From R10 999
Apple Watch Series 1 | 38mm Aluminium | From R4 999 |
42mm Aluminium | From R5 999
Apple Watch Edition | 38mm White Ceramic | R22 999 |
42mm White Ceramic | R23 999 |
I must say I’m particularly surprised at the Apple Watch Series 2 prices, which match up almost identically to European and British prices of the Watch when it went on sale a few weeks ago. Yes, Apple is still an expensive luxury, but any Apple fan out there will argue that its quality offsets that. Either way, two weeks isn’t too long to wait in any case.

My brother had spent a whole Sunday afternoon, well into the night, to configure his iPhone and iPod with the music he wanted. Was really placed.
Went into CBD to hand in building plans for his business and was mugged, lost both. He was way pissed, he got new equipment though insurance, but the setups and all that. Not fun, being mugged, I understand. Third time he was mugged, so he much calmer about it. Even asked the thief for his wallet back AND got the wallet back (with cards, Drivers license and the like), sans money.

I wonder what the insurance companies going to do when people lose the wireless ear pieces that cost $160 to replace. There will be tons of people that are going to lose them

September 30, 2016 at 09:27
They aren’t standard with the iPhone. You get a wired pair in the box
Marek Nourse
September 30, 2016 at 09:29
So what connection are they going to use with no audio jack?
Grimsupanoob
September 30, 2016 at 09:31
that useless proprietary jack that only they use. you can either charge the phone OR listen to music…
Dungeon of JJ
September 30, 2016 at 09:58
Well, that’s idiotic. But then again, the no audio jack thing was just a huge marketing exercise.
miaau
September 30, 2016 at 10:00
Well, I know several people that are very keen to try this, people who jog, for example, and listen while they jog, would leave a decent wireless kit, that does not hurt the ears
Dungeon of JJ
September 30, 2016 at 10:02
The wireless thing I understand, completely. But the removal of the audio jack was just a marketing exercise. They could’ve kept that in, for those who will still use normal earphones.

September 30, 2016 at 09:46

Dungeon of JJ
September 30, 2016 at 09:49
Then you’re running the wrong pc, since you have multiple OSs on one 🙂
miaau
September 30, 2016 at 09:50
Yeah, not talking the same thing at all. And my days of running multiple OS’s are bloody well done, thank you. Too much effort.
iPhone is, for me, an impressive piece of kit because it has the same or better performance than a Galaxy S6 but has slower CPU, less ram, that sort of thing.
Dungeon of JJ
September 30, 2016 at 09:52
Well OSs are a subjective thing in the end anyway. I’ve messed around on an iPhone, and didn’t like the OS at all.
You only feel the tech a year or so later, but since Apple nuts try to upgrade the second a new one comes out old tech doesn’t matter much to them.
miaau
September 30, 2016 at 09:58
I know, I knows. People I know will get the new iphone the minute is released, same day. Have even stood in line at midnight to get the phones then, two, for husband and wife.
I just do not understand that.
Dungeon of JJ
September 30, 2016 at 10:01
Yea, that’s a bit much. Like people who waited in long lines to be the first to try Burger King when it got here. I mean, come on. Some patience.
I guess that’s the same mentality that goes with gaming sometimes where people keep pre-ordering just because they HAVE to have a game at release, regardless of how crappy it might turn out to be.

I pre-ordered one game this year and I could’ve gone without it. Price was good though, so it wasn’t a waste.

September 30, 2016 at 18:38
When you say old tech, are you perhaps talking about the processor in the iPhone? It’s nearly twice as fast as the closest runner-up in single threaded performance, and despite being only dual core, matches the Galaxy Note 7 in multi-threaded performance (which has an octacore processor, IIRC). I’ll link you to the benchmarks, if you’d like…

Once, when my little girl was about 1 and half, we took her mother (my wife) to a mall to get pampered, you know, nails, feet, that sort of thing.
So, anyway, my daughter and I walked the entire mall, she loved it, running from place to place. We happened to to sit on a bench outside the Apple Store, eating some snacks. and she was holding her Shaun the Sheep doll very tightly to her. I thought it was apt.
More seriously, I was shocked at the amount of people walking out with bags of stuff, at the prices Apple charges. Really, really shocked.

But seriously, I have great respect for the Tech, just not for me. My wife, bless her, bought the Nokia Lumia 920 (a seriously good phone) when it came out over the Samsung S4 (I think it was 4?) and the latest iPhone, based the following:
1. I want a phone that can make calls
2. NO FASHION ACCESSORIES

in the 7 odd years of owning a lot of apple devices. I have not had one issue or break. Blah blah blah Apple is over rated. My devices work, they are seamless and I am happy. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy their products.
