A new wearable device lets men experience the joys of pregnancy

One of the things I’m grateful for as a man, is not having to ever be pregnant. Don’t get me wrong, I think child birth is an amazing thing, but I’ve seen what women go through when they’re pregnant and I want no part of it. There are many men out there who would love to have the opportunity to experience the joys of pregnancy. And soon they will get the opportunity to do that – through the a device connected on their wrists.

The Fibo is a new bracelet designed by some Danish students from the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology that is designed to allow dads to be to feel their babies kicking in their mothers’ stomachs.  So, just how do they achieve this? Well, the pregnant mom-to-be wears a baby kick monitoring device on her belly during the last trimester, and as the baby kicks and otherwise moves, the Fibo smart bracelet collects that movement data. This movement data is then sent to a paired device worn by the father-to-be and allows them to feel a similar emotion. The bracelet contains four small beads that mimic the baby’s movements by rotating and pressing on the wrist of the person wearing it and allowing him or her to feel the kicks or turns in real time. The four beads can position themselves a wide array of different combinations, also leaving a unique imprint not just felt by the wearer, but seen too.

The product is still under development and the developers are still working with a group of couples willing to test with the devices, but according to them, in an interview with the Huffington Post, the initial results have been positive and one of the benefits that has been identified by the device is that the men have an opportunity to wear the device and also get to show the world that they are expecting:

Many fathers we spoke to said they first realized they were bringing a new life into the world when they heard their baby’s heartbeat for the first time. We want this feeling to last longer.

Although the focus has largely been on allowing father’s to experience some of the joys of pregnancy, the device has further reaching implications like allowing same sex parents parents to feel the kicks and movments of their children within a surrogate mother.

To be fair, men have to deal with those same mood swings

When I read the headline I automatically assumed that the device would send excruciating pain into the mans wrist during labour.

And now we just need a device that lets women experience the joys of getting hit in the nuts.
