NVIDIA wants its GPUS with gamers rather than cryptominers

Though cryptocurrencies have taken a sharp turn for the worse, the practice of mining the stuff has meant that GPU’s meant primarily for gaming have been snapped up for digital gains. It’s because the chips on graphics cards these days are General-purpose computing on graphics processing units or GPGPUS, and are capable of doing non-graphical computing exceptionally well thanks to the way they handle parallel tasks.

It’s largely meant that those looking to make a quick buck have snapped up most of the higher end cards, leading to a shortage of the things for those who want them for their intended purpose. While both AMD and Nvidia are laughing all the way to the bank, an Nvidia spokesperson, Boris Böhles told Germany’s ComputerBase that they’re urging their customers and distribution partners to service gamers over miners.

Because it’s impossible to know exactly who you’re selling to, it’s a nice – if hollow – gesture.

“For NVIDIA, gamers come first. All activities related to our GeForce product line are targeted at our main audience. To ensure that GeForce gamers continue to have good GeForce graphics card availability in the current situation, we recommend that our trading partners make the appropriate arrangements to meet gamers’ needs as usual.”

Of course, given the recent slide in Bitcoin and its associated alts, now might be a good time to scour your local second-hand goods listers for some great deals on GPUS.
