Nvidia’s new Maxwell 880 will make consoles look silly

Nvidia

Rumoured specifications of Nvidia’s upcoming new flagship, Maxwell-based GTX 880 have been flying about for ages. Some have said we should expect the thing to be fabricated on a 20nm process and that it would sport 4GB of GDDR5, packing in 3,200 CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores. According to some leaked images, at least some of that is true.

According to even more rumours, the 20nm process has been delayed because Taiwan’s mega chip manufacturer TSMC is struggling to shrink the silicon expeditiously enough, forcing Nvidia to stick with the 28nm silicon instead. that appears to be true. New leaked images ( via WCCFTech) of what could well be the Maxwell 800 have surfaced, showing a card with 28nm silicon, and up to 16GB of RAM.

Geforce-Maxwell-GTX-880-Flagship

The leaked images show a reference prototype board packing 8GB of RAM, which in itself is ludicrous; that’s as much as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have in total, dedicated just to graphics processing. The professional Quadro variants will likely use the full 16GB allotment.

What is interesting about these leaked pics is the large blurry bit, which suggests that these cards have something special about them. Speculation right now suggests that these GPU’s will each sport 8 ARMv8, making them suited to to the high-performance computing market.Yes, each of these things will essentially be a super computer.

The thing is also power hungry. This prototype board sucks up a ton of energy and spits it out as heat, with a current TDP (thermal design power) of 375W, which is about as much as our own sun. It’s rather unlikely that the final product will require it’s own coal mine to power; expect it to be far, far more efficient.

When available, this beast of card will likely run just about anything you throw at it, at whatever resolution your heart, and screen desire. It will also likely cost 3 of your limbs. No release date yet, but December 2014 for the 28nm variant is likely.

Of course, if you want the best right now, you could always opt for Nvidia’s $3000 Kepler based Titan-Z, which duct-tapes two GTX 780Ti’s together for all the bragging rights in the entire universe. Because you need this stuff to play Rock Simulator and Minecraft.

They are, but PC maintenance and longevity barely make it worth it.
if i wasnt so incapable with console controllers and if not for PCs being so… usefull… i might have caved and moved on to consoles.

My PC has been trying to make my life as difficult as possible, recently.

PC maintenance is blown way out of proportion and longetivity is shrunk down far more than it should be.

PC’s don’t last only a year or two like so many believe.

My PC is going on 3 years now and I still play games on high. My last PC lasted 8 years with just 1 GPU upgrade (Where the GPU didn’t blow because of my own stupidity)

sure its blown out of proportion, but its also not a complete lie.

in the past year, ive had to replace my cpu, psu and motherboard, because of some mysterious PC magic that no one can ever explain, that caused it to have a heart attack.
a month ago, my RAM was struck by more mysterious PC magic which caused one of the sticks to randomly become faulty.

longevity problems from being stingy and dismayed at the cost of new hardware, not wanting to fork out R2500 to get a cpu thats only slightly stronger than the one i bought 2 years befor, for R1500.

i did, after the 3rd PSU died.
got a surge protected power strip, then even invested in a UPS.

stuff still managed to go wrong.

Were you buying proper PSU’s? And by proper I mean good quality but not overkill either (a 1000W gaming PSU on a single mid range setup with a mid range mobo could cause heavy destruction. The same as an underpowered or bad quality PSU would)

            July 3, 2014 at 12:56

not initially, and not when we didnt know why they were blowing.
but i havent bought a no name brand PSU in atleast 8 years.
theyv all been gigabit or corsair 550 or 650W.
been through about 3 of them with this PC, all dying for different reasons and with different symptoms.

one just suddenly stopped working completely.
another started producing less power, a 650W psu that randomly dropped to a 400W.

the other one, died with my CPU and motherboard. or took the CPU and motherboard with it, never figured out what caused it.

Seasonic. Corsair and Gigabyte PSU’s are good but often give issues (I’ve heard).

Dude you have some bad luck 0_0.

Worst I ever had was a PC blown out by lighting (Insurance claim) and some RAM that popped. Didn’t have to pay. Corsair has a lifetime warranty on their RAM modules. (that’s why I always tell people to use only Corsair).
Oh and my GPU that I tried to be fancy with and reflash its BIOS chip (Went super well as you can guess). But nVidia were kind enough to replace it for me as a warranty swop out.

Other than that I’ve never had bad experiences.

That being said. I’ve heard of consoles also popping and costing the user another 4K or whatever to replace. It’s tech. It happens everywhere

Really, once you turn it on it should run for forever. If you can play a game on high, you can still play that same game on high for years. Its exactly the same as a console on the inside.

You can buy fans that come with dust filters. Otherwise grab some of those air filter type materials from your local hardware store and shape it around the vents. Most modern cases come with this standard but if you have an older case you can rectify it for a reasonable price and not much effort.

Thermal gel can get crusty and useless if you run your system hot, though this isn’t PC specific.
My PS3 started bombing out a while back, thermal gel had worn out. Luckily there was no permanent damage.
Have vowed to change it every few years along with my PC’s.

The Last of Us for PS3 is a cool 27 GB download.
The devs say that the PS4 version is limited by the size of a blu ray disc so we can easily say it would be a 50GB download

This is generally a trend with the exclusives as the devs don’t have to worry about shipping to blu-ray impeded systems.

Actually, internet speeds across most of America are lower than some of those in third world countries. It isn’t a choice, so to speak, for most of them, it is a lack of choices. Americans only have themselves to blame though. 375w tdp? Good grief. The 780’s are only at 250w.

Something doesn’t sound right here. The new maxwell architeture is meant to be power sufficient (Proven by the existing maxwell based cards GTX 750 etc).

So how come such a large jump for a power efficient design? If it’s true that it is going to require 375w then this thing should be performing at almost double that of the 780ti’s? I find that hard to believe. But hey. Who knows how the tech is going to pan out.

The best thing about this generation of consoles is the fact that they use PC chips. It significantly decreases the difficulty of development.

It happened with the PS3. They had a really difficult-to-use, but powerful chip on board.
As a result, it took longer for devs to optimise.

The mathematical operations required by games are usually large matrix transformations. This is precisely what GPU’s have been developed for.

Throwing in a bunch of low-power ARM processors would probably require more effort than just optimising the code.

i dont think average spec is relevant, games dictate the average, so the minimum requirements are whats important.

in terms of core gamers though, the ati 7850 or nvidia 670 are the average medium-high spec PCs

it will still be a few years befor something like even the old titan is the average standard

I’d say the 770 is now the medium spec. 780 would be high spec and a titan would be uber spec.

Low spec would be a 670.

Its sad that progess is held back by the consoles. We saw some cool new graphics this year thanks to the new consoles, even though PC’s have had the power available to achieve those same graphics for many years now and not at a high price.

I don’t know if I can agree. Have a mate who bought a 770 recently and he can now play all games at ultra and well over 60FPS. So he has a load of overhead processing power for future power hungry games.

I run a 560ti and can still run todays games on high. Heck I can do ultra at 60FPS if I drop to 720p in my games.

The mid range of today is the 660 or 750. (Not TI’s). Anything in the R2500 – R3000 bracket really. Anything higher and you are in high – top range

560ti is a strong card though, and still retails for a similar price to the cards we both mentioned.
heck, my friends using my 550ti which is significantly weaker than a 560ti.
mostly has alot to do with the other hardware in your PC, some CPUs age better than others.

            July 3, 2014 at 12:46

No ways it still retails at R2500 still? Sheesh.

It all goes about smart buying. Buy that which has potential to last. One doesn’t need to spend boatloads of cash. But buy smart.

            Do some research.

My setup is an i7-2600 (non K) 4GB Ram and a 560Ti. I bought them because at the time they were best bang for buck and the performance was incredible.

If you had to buy now I would say an i5, GTX 660 or similiar, 4GB Ram (8 if you want the extra comfort of more Ram). Low-mid range Mobo. Set for at least 6 years then.

            July 3, 2014 at 13:07

well, not R2500, but its still more than the R1500 youd pay for a 750 or something.

the i7 is why your PC has aged so well.
i bought an AMD phenomx4 945 for R1500 around the same time the i7s came out, and the AMDs didnt age as well.

if i was going to build a new PC now, id definitely go for a good i5 paired with either a 660 or AMD R9 270

nvidia and intel have given me less problems in the past and Id love to go that route again, but AMD giving you a 256bit card for the same price as nvidia gives you a 192bit card, makes it a hard decision.

graphics cards havent been much of a problem for me though, so I’ll probably go AMD for that.
but the intel CPU is a no brainer, even if they are more expensive, I havent been happy with an AMD CPU for ages.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            July 3, 2014 at 13:11

Agreed. The AMD chips do age a little worse. But I’ve seen some that last forever. Heck my last PC that lasted 8 years was an AMD FX64bit single core 🙂

If I was you though I’d try to get a HyperThreaded CPU simply because games are going to start using 8 threads now that consoles are 8 core CPUs.

            Just my 2cents worth

          • Matthew Holliday

            July 3, 2014 at 13:26

the FX64bit stuff were good aswell, if you put the money into your upgrades, they last nicely, AMD and nvidia were more evenly matched, back in the day. at one point, it was a no brainer to choose AMD over nvidia for a gaming PC.

holding off my upgrade for now though, untill something breaks atleast, lol
everything is running fine atm, but I dont see the CPU i got as a rush replacement, aging too well.
will probably sell it closer to the Mass Effect 4 release date and build a new one.

Hmm don’t think the 670 is low spec it’s almost on par with the 770? Medium -Low spec would be 650 or 5xx and lower imo. There are very few games to really push the high end cards (780+) on 1080p.

That’s mostly what I’m thinking of. PC gamers blame the consoles for bad PC games, but I think if you look at average PC specs that might also be a reason for bad PC games. I don’t want to start a flame war here or anything but I think it’s more than just consoles that are to blame.

No I don’t think that has much impact really. Gaming PCs & work PCs are very different beasts. Besides, I don’t blame consoles for bad PC games, I blame the devs for making shitty, lazy ports of console games.

Average pc spec ? High end i3 or low end i5 , 2gigs gpu

Plenty in those specs to most kick a ps4 ass …. I wish that developers wouldn’t hold back on the pc platform ! Watch doggs a good example

PS4 is a great price/performance value for $400 and more powerful than most PCs. It’s a business. The console AAA market is larger and pushes devs technology forward. Sorry if you hate the fact that consoles are a viable financial market.
