Oculus VR got a lot of grief when they decided to financially partner up with Facebook earlier this year. Some backers felt it was a sell out, and that the company’s vision would now be influenced by the social media giant. That hasn’t happened yet, but could you imagine what would’ve happened if Oculus partnered up with the likes of Sony or Microsoft?
According to Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe not only will that never happen, but it was never an option. Oculus VR never sought the aid of either side of the console war, in fears that the partnership would limit their vision of a VR gaming future to a specific platform.
“If we were going to partner with somebody, because this is a long road ahead, we were thinking the whole time that we wouldn’t partner with Microsoft or Sony,”
That’s because the Oculus Rift isn’t trying to be a new accessory, but rather a brand new platform altogether. It wouldn’t make sense for the VR headset to become a secondary exclusive platform to a console.
Oculus also passed up on Google due to their involvement in far to many auxiliary businesses that also tend to relate to the gaming sphere. Facebook was eventually choose as the ideal partner, with their narrow focus on social media proving the least obtrusive for Oculus VR.
The Oculus Rift is currently on its third prototype, with a consumer version hopefully reaching shelves sometime next year. Prepare your wallets.

Their logic is sound. If you look at the movies and series that have virtual reality present, SAO being my favourite, its usually connected to a pc so I don’t think consoles were ever going to be an option. But this will change gaming completely if it gets to the levels that fiction has shown us, which I’m hoping it does

Not sure, I think the consumer version is going to run at quite a high resolution. Maybe not 4k, but probably a minimum of 1440p to avoid the screen door effect. And perhaps it will just support DSR on the PC. But I don’t think its going to be 1080p or lower.

Wish they would just release it already, unless they trying to decrease production cost to make the price point more affordable in which case, take as long as you like
