PVZ2

Here’s something that I never saw coming. Plants versus Zombies was a game that had you in control of vegetable patch that was groovier than the one found on top of Bob Marley’s grave, as the undead came for you. With a sequel on the way, I’ve had my bank account primed and ready for it, for a while now. Except the game is going to be completely free.

Yep, Plants versus Zombies 2: It’s about time will indeed be going free to play, with microtransactions being available for in-game items.

PVZ2

According to Popcap though, you won’t need any of these items though, as you defend your homestead from the walking dead with all manner of plant life. In a press statement that we received, Senior producer Allen Murray said “We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game”.

We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.

I’m pretty damn excited for the game. And I don’t even mind dropping some coin for items anyway, because I was expecting the game to ship with a retail price in the first place. I’m just hoping that I truly won’t need those extras, and they won’t cost more than the RRP of said game when it arrives on July 18.

  1. Oh dear. Microtransactions *Shudder*

I hope that the MT’s are really going to be aesthetic in nature and not required for gameplay

Absolutely, that will be make or break for me. I don’t mind spending some money on a good free-to-play game eventually, but as soon as it becomes expected I un-install the game and then rant.

*sniff* Than man. Needed that. Still feel sad about it though. As far as “casual gaming” (Although as Zoe pointed out yesterday that term really needs to disappear) goes this is one of my favorites

That’s the only reason I haven’t been as excited for this news. I’m sure there are a lot of Galaxy S 4 users who will feel similarly. I really would have preferred a simultaneous PC/Mac release 🙁

EA are really earning that worst company of America title. Microtransactions and timed-exclusivity are really unattractive to me.
