Professor Layton and Fantasy Life sequels coming to smartphones only

Professor Layton is an incredibly popular franchise in the handheld market. So popular, that the 7th game is going to be released this year. However, it won’t be on the same platform as usual. Similarly, Fantasy Life’s sequel will leave behind the 3DS.

Professor Layton’s fun and quirky puzzle solving mechanics are beautifully suited to the 3DS. Pick up and play for a bit, follow the plot line and then put the game down for a bit as your brain is sufficiently teased with those puzzles. When I played the latest one, I found it to be an excellent puzzle game and thoroughly enjoyed having it on my 3DS. Of course, the real money is to found in smartphones, and when I initially heard that the new game would be coming to Android and iOS, I thought it could actually work well. Unfortunately, Level-5 had to change things to make me miserable.

According to Polygon, Layton 7 isn’t like other Layton games:

Level-5’s new Layton game appears to be a pretty substantial deviation from other games in the series; using skills and reasoning, players will have to determine which member of a group of characters is secretly a vampire in disguise. The concept for the card-based game sounds similar to classic reasoning game Mafia, also known as Werewolf.

What is this? This is not how a Layton game works – this sounds awful and makes me far too sad. I love the Professor Layton games, but when you make them into this, it just becomes a waste of my time.

Fantasy Life 2 will also be coming to smart devices and players will once again pursue one (or many) of 12 lives. The focus in the mobile game is more about building up the village, collecting villagers and playing with other players. Village building? Hmm, I think I know what kind of micro transactions we can expect, right?

Why would Level 5 do this? They have the ability to make such cool games, but these smartphone sequels just sound like cheap money grabs. I hope they prove me wrong and make really cool smartphone games, but it sounds like yet another franchise is about to be ruined.

When I hear that a game is being developed for iOS or Android only, I immediately think that the devs are lazy and not skilled enough.
