Razer’s three-screen laptop prototypes stolen from CES

Razer made headlines this CES thanks to technologically impressive and inventive, but frankly silly prototypes. One of which, the triple-screened Project Valerie, would have given laptop gamers a surround screen gaming experience. Sporting 3 G-Synch 4K IGZO displays, a full GTX 1080, 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a core i7, it’s the sort of lustworthy, but impracticable prototype that CES has become known for.

And it’s been stolen.

Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan confirmed that two of the company’s Valerie prototypes were unceremoniously misappropriated from the technology exhibition.

“I’ve just been informed that two of our prototypes were stolen from our booth at CES today,” Tan said on Facebook. “We have filed the necessary reports and are currently working with the show management as well as law enforcement to address this issue.”

Razer is taking this all rather seriously, as you’d imagine. There’s no word on whether it’s an attempt at corporate espionage, or the sticky paws of an opportunistic consumer – but if it’s the former, and Razer finds out, the culprit is in for legal trouble.

“At Razer, we play hard and we play fair,” Tan says. “Our teams worked months on end to conceptualize and develop these units and we pride ourselves in pushing the envelope to deliver the latest and greatest.

We treat theft/larceny, and if relevant to this case, industrial espionage, very seriously – it is cheating, and cheating doesn’t sit well with us. Penalties for such crimes are grievous and anyone who would do this clearly isn’t very smart.”

To help right things, Razer is offering a cash reward of $25 000 for “original information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of a criminal suspect.”
