Though the SNES was never officially released in South Africa, many of you have played its games through other means. Remember Secret of Mana? It was essentially Square’s take on The Legend of Zelda; an action RPG that ditched the turn-based combat for real-time sword fighting. Maybe you remember its PlayStation sequel, Legend of Mana. Well, they’re getting another sequel. Brace yourselves.
Because it’s going to be a free-to-play game. For Smartphones and tablets. Seiken Densetsu: Rise of Mana is in development for iOS and Android, Square Enix revealed in this week’s Famitsu. And as you’d expect, the game is set to be a microtransaction-laden minefield.
The trademark for Rise of Mana was unearthed last year, giving hope that Square Enix was going to do something proper with the series. In the past few months, more tiny leaks have pointed to a new Mana game and that hope has intensified. Now those hopes and dreams have been dashed.
The reaction to this, I imagine, is similar to the ire Capcom received when it decided to resurrect its own RPG series, Breath of Fire as a social, tablet-controller online free to play mess.
Companies seem to be on a warpath to destroy your memories and nostalgia, by turning their latent, once successful franchises in to mobile games. None of this is surprising in the least, but it’s still rather disappointing. Next up, they’ll be making a new Chrono Trigger sequel, where you’ll have to pay 99c every time you jump to a different time.

Mobile gaming, where franchises go to die whimpering in the corner like overdosing tik addicts.
I used to be a game like you, but then I took a cellphone to the knee.

What does the Wii have anything do with it? Games on the Wii were awesome. And still are on the Wii U.

Thankfully this doesn’t look all that interesting and I’ve never played either of the originals so no nostalgia for me.

February 26, 2014 at 11:15
I just realized why F2P is so popular.
If you don’t buy the game then you can’t bitch if it shutsdown because it’s provided as a complimentary service and you don’t actually own the right to it.
RinceandLeSIGH
February 26, 2014 at 11:16
Since when do current gen gamers own the rights to their games anyway?

Since Steam?

You need to read those terms and conditions more carefully. You never own the right to a game, otherwise you could copy it and sell it. You merely have a right, at the discretion of the rights holder, to play the said game in the said manner. And all rights may be withdraw at any time. Do you agree to these terms, well if you didn’t then you can’t play.
