I am so obviously not a PC gamer – I only really heard of people overclocking their rigs recently, and I wasn’t quite sure that I got the point. I mean, if you want better performance, surely you should just upgrade your kit? However, overclocking is actually quite a big deal, and a local South African is heading to China to compete, with the help of ASUS Republic of Gamers.
The Poseidon GTX 980 gives you the choice of air or liquid cooling and because I know so little about it, here is a copy and paste from the press release about the product:
ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced Poseidon GTX 980 with GeForce® GTX 980 GPUs and exclusive DirectCU H2O hybrid thermal solution delivers 2X-cooler and 3X-quieter. DirectCU H2O technology employs a combined air and water channel to provide complete flexibility for the user. A custom vapor chamber is in direct contact with the cards’ GPUs for faster heat dispersal, while copper heat-pipes and extended cooling fins further transfer heat out and away from the cards to keep them running cool. With water cooling, ROG Poseidon graphics cards achieve up to 27°C-lower running temperatures than reference design. In addition, with standard G¼-inch threaded fittings, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 easily accommodate existing cooling equipment – so users can get going with water cooling right away. For enhanced overclocked headroom and gaming experience, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 is loaded with DIGI+ VRM, 10-phase Super Alloy Power and Japan-made black metallic capacitors. The bundled ROG Edition GPU Tweak utility provides real-time intuitive graphics tuning and easier overclocking. A simple online-streaming function lets users share gameplay live – so people can watch as you play.
The Poseidon retails for R8 699 and probably won’t be coming to South Africa. Except that’s a bit of a lie – one unit will be shipped in specifically for Andrew “BelowZer0” Roberts. He’s traveling to China in December to attend the Galac GOC 2014 Worldwide Grand Final from Futuremark. Yes, there is actually a major global competition for overclocking, and a South African will be proudly waving the flag.
Are you jealous of this kind of hardware? Would you buy it if this were made locally available, or does it all seem like a bunch of hot air (and cool water)?

But does he have national colours? Colin says NO! STEP AWAY FROM THE FLAG!
But seriously, that’s awesome, all the best and bring back the silverware! And don’t melt anything 🙂

I actually need to just clean the inside of my PC, Star Citizen Arena commander pushes CPU to 52% and 65 degrees C. Luckily it only uses around 11% RAM.

There’s a easy solution – feed the hubby a giant plate of beans & go out for the rest of the day.

not that I know spit about hardware (did A+ in 1999? did not care for it), but what the compressed air for car tires? Too strong for the PCB?

Just don’t blow them directly onto the fans without holding the blades… I know people thinks it sounds cool when the fans starts revving up and make a noise, but that noise is your fan breaking!

Or should I rarther attempt to oc my gpu first ? I have a grx760 I think 4 gig DDR 5 ram ?

Buddy you will lag playing unity, the game is horribly unoptimized. People with SLI GTX980’s are struggling with the game. If your going to soldier through the lag then your best of playing on high with AA off.

You should read the steam reviews. Every single one says do not buy because of its horrible performance. Buy it if it gets patched. Don’t think overclocking will make much of a difference.
