Right now, there’s a deluge of dirt-cheap mobile-centric games on the various devices’ app stores. Their popularity has increased the scope on just who is considered a gamer – and is also being pegged as the leading cause in the imminent death of traditional handheld gaming. How do you get people to buy expensive games when people are only willing to spend 99c on a gaming experience? Apparently you don;t need to – because the 99c gamer, according to Telltale, is a myth.

Gamers, says Telltale senior vice president of publishing Steve Allison, are willing to pay for quality – and aren’t so tight-fisted that they’ll only pay 99 cents for a game.

“We knew The Walking Dead was shaping up to be a great touch screen experience and as our first universal iOS title that would also be available on console, $4.99 an episode is consistent with our past successful experiences on the App Store and with the pricing on other platforms,” said Allison.”The idea of a 99c gamer on iOS is more myth than fact, it’s the quality and depth of each product that will drive the right price for consumers. We’ve had a great initial launch as a top 10 title with no signs of slowing down and great feedback on the game from people who have bought the game for their iOS devices.”

“This is the right price for our game and it has not impeded our ability to get people interested in buying it,” he added.

Telltale’s Walking Dead is currently available on Xbox Live Arcade, the PSN, Steam and iTunes – and is really pretty damned good. Based more on the comics than the wildly inferior to the source material AMC TV show, Telltale’s The Walking Dead has you adventuring yourself away from the undead.
