The HTC One (M8) gets unboxed

A few days ago Zoe and Matty attended a special press briefing hosted by HTC. They’re back in the country, bringing along the stunning HTC One (M8) and its smaller sibling, the HTC One Mini. Douglas Jewson, Country Manager for HTC, spoke about their plans for re-entering the market, and how their devices can possibly compete with the Apple and Samsung dominance locally. So while they got the interview, I got the toy.

For the next two weeks or so I’ll be messing around with the HTC One (M8). I haven’t had an HTC in years, but I did like the particularly successful Desire line when I still enjoy Android’s operating system. Ever since then it has been nothing but Apple for me, but it is somewhat refreshing to have a small change for a while. And if I had to choose a phone to cheat on my iPhone with, you bet it would be an HTC.

So its probably not surprising that I completely forgot to make an unboxing video before actually open the the box and setting the phone up. I could hear Zoe’s cries all the way from Benoni, so I quickly repackaged everything and recorded the video below. There’s not much in the box, but I get to go on about how damn sexy the phone is, show off its weird two rear camera design and praise Sense UI 6.0. No cats this time around (because mine don’t love me) but my dogs do decide to go mental for a few seconds somewhere. Although I don’t think that will win the internet over quite like cats do.

I’m still adjusting to the massive screen size, but so far I’m more than impressed with the M8. I’ll be messing around with the finer details over the next few days, so expect the review to be up fairly soon. If you’re an Android fanatic and you’re looking for one of the best smartphones of this year, you’ll probably want to check it out. This could be it.

That K-TV 80’s rap intro theme song actually had me cringing. Mostly because I remember how excited I got when hearing it.

I recently rewatched Quantum Leap and that aged very well… A-Team as well, although the 80s cheese is knee deep.

Knight Rider also aged well; MacGyver on the other hand not so well.

Yeah, MacGyver’s almost unwatchable now… :/ Magnum PI also aged incredibly well.

You know what aged well, even if its new, but actually old? Enterprise. Love that show!

            July 11, 2014 at 10:13

Star Trek is always watchable – and I think I’m one of the few that enjoyed Enterprise. Scott Bakula was a cooler Starship Captain than Piccard.

            July 11, 2014 at 10:17

Agreed, I think because of the fact that Enterprise is really vulnerable, makes it more “real”

Picard is awesome, but Archer ftw

            July 11, 2014 at 10:19

Yeah, also the lack of prime directive makes Enterprise a much better show. They could do a lot more, without the Federation’s nonsense. Pity, Trekkies didn’t like it – sigh! But at least I have my DVD boxsets.

Epic. Actually got the mrs into the story big time! Season 4 now!

            Pity about the ending…

            July 11, 2014 at 10:22

Yeah… :/ Another show that I loved was Stargate Universe.

Good show, but my least favourite Stargate. The automated drone enemy felt the were just rehashing a few episodes; also the ending suck big time.

Yeah, but that’s more Syfy’s doing, the producers thought they had three seasons to flesh out a series of massive story arcs, instead Syfy cancelled the show – to make room for more Ghost Hunters….

Hopped the other through my “old favourite channels” Discovery and History have now devolved into 24 hour reality series channels. Despite there being already 2 dedicated reality series channels on DSTV, History decides to launch a version of “Old History Channel”, does DSTV pick it up? No they ad another 3 CBS reality series channels.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            July 11, 2014 at 10:58

Yeah, it’s sad what happened to the History Channel. It’s now filled with reality tv crap about storage container folk. We actually cancelled our DSTV when the History Channel went downhill. These days we exist on Netflix, Crackle, Blurays, Hulu and whatever I can download from the Piratebay. I’m not proud of it, but I refuse to give money to multichoice.

I’ve stuck with it for the Kiddie channels and HD sport. But it seems the sport alternatives are more viable now and the kid is watching more Youtube Let’s play and Lego video than cartoons since at 5 he realized that watching ads 50% of the time is a rip off.

With Multichoice limiting a lot of their new features to the new R2500 decoder it is pushing me over the limits.

It was just starting to get interesting too. Also found Atlantis more fun than SG-1.

SG-1 should have stopped with the ending of the original storyline. Didn’t enjoy the Ori storyline too much. But then even mediocre Stargate is better than no Stargate.

I’d like to compare this unboxing to the unboxings that mybroadband does… oh wait a minute… Never mind. I hate the way that mybraodband reviews hardware. I enjoy seeing photos and videos taken by the reviewer, not those stupid stock photos.

    So yeah, nice unboxing!
