There’s a new GTX 980 already?

Just a few short weeks ago Nvidia official released their next-generation graphics cards, the GTX 980 and 970. Powered by their new Maxwell technology, the cards focused more on power efficiency, but still managed to outpace the staggeringly fast 700 series’ best. The GTX 980, in particular, is an incredible card, and it could be getting an upgrade already.

That’s according to WCCFTech, who have heard via their source grapevine that Nvidia is prepping a new variant of their flagship card. Right now, bot the GTX 980 and 970 ship with 4Gb of VRAM, which is more than enough for your sub-4K gaming needs. If you’re looking for smooth, super-resolution gaming though, you’re a bit out of luck in terms of single cards (dual-cards excluded).

That could change next month, as Nvidia is apparently planning to launch a new 8GB GTX 980. That’s around the region of memory you need to be for proper 4K gaming nowadays, with the power of the Maxwell chip to back it up. A single card may not be enough for the smoothest 4K gaming around, but two of these cards would definitely fit the bill – especially since VRAM isn’t doubled over Crossfire and SLI configurations, making a single pool of 8GB extremely useful. There’s no official word from Nvidia on the authenticity of the rumour, but it’s a move that would make a lot of sense to me.

Gaming at 4K is still very niche at the moment, but a card like this would definitely sell like hotcakes to anyone venturing into that realm. Or, better yet, anyone looking to future-proof their desktop for the foreseeable future.

Luckily I got mine second hand from a trusted friend. So asking price is still like R8300 and I paid R7000, but I just know that time is coming 🙁 #GeekComputerProblems

I really need to upgrade my ram again considering my total is severely outpaced by a goddamn GPU lol. Master Race, but with thin pockets FTW

Real worlds resolution is great but its all endless grinding on monotonous fetch quests and boring crafting.

Yeah, but you need to do the grinding to be able to afford the portal leading to the other world 😛

I’m somewhat expecting/hoping the 980 Ti to be 8GB + higher clockspeed version of the 980.
