Whenever a new bit of electronics is released, you get to watch some idiot with a screwdriver take it apart, pretending he really knows what’s going on inside the thing. It’s called a “teardown.” In this case, that idiot is actually Sony’s hardware engineering director, Yasuhiro Ootori – who probably knows a thing or two about the PlayStation 4. Watch him take a PS4 apart.
Even though I’ve seen and touched a PS4, I still can’t get over how small it is (that’s what she said), especially when compared to the positively behemoth Xbox One.
Watch, enjoy. Video courtesy of Wired.com

Well if they state it can be replaced in the video then there must be some form of warranty safe way to do it

I just sit here and wonder why they didn’t put another 2 – 5 of those RAM chips on that board, more than enough space there for them 😀
Wesley Fick
November 7, 2013 at 16:39
Getting more chips on would mean using different chip densities and a larger memory bus to achieve maximum performance and throughput. With eight 1GB chips and a 256-bit bus, it’s also probably the most cost-effective solution Sony could come up with. 10 chips would need a 384-bit bus and would offer less bandwidth and require more traces in the circuit board, as well as higher power consumption and more heat.
HvR
November 7, 2013 at 17:36
Each of those chips needs dozens of data and signal lines (busses) to be traced to the combined processor.
The area you see there is the absolute most optimized design to put so many memory chips connected to a single processor package without causing major EM emission problems and data corruption and took a CAD team months to design, test and optimize.

Moving on. That was interesting. Looks so much simpler than your average PC. How do they keep the CPU cool without a direct heat sink attached?
Wesley Fick
November 7, 2013 at 16:41
The copper heatpipes attach to the aluminium motherboard backplate, which itself is a giant heatsink. There’s a part of the backplate that protrudes and makes contact with the APU and the thermal grease seals the deal.

I’m looking at this thinking it’s really not that hard to modify. You can actually find a server cooler with more heat pipes that might fit there. And the fan can probably be upgraded to something that pushes more air. And about the power supply, can probably modify that as well… remove it and go with the external block, but that way you have more power and more possibilities.
It won’t be easy, but I’m sure it can be done.
TiMsTeR1033
November 8, 2013 at 08:00
What I find interesting, is everything is part of the board! Not detachable… find this rather odd.. but also should help cut costs, I would imagine..
Axon1988
November 8, 2013 at 08:14
Yeah I think that’s what they had in mind, also if something breaks you just replace the part. Which makes it super easy… but not really that cheap to fix.
So the ultimate mod for PS4! Put ps4 hardware inside xbone chassis… HELL YES
