What do you need to run GTA V at 4K?

We told you yesterday that GTA V on PC wouldn’t be some sloppy, slap-sash port from the console versions, and will host a number of exclusive Pc features like a robust video editor, and the ability to scale the game in a frankly ludicrous manner of ways to get it tuned to your system.

“One of the lessons we have learned over the years through Grand Theft Auto IV and Max Payne 3 on PC was that people want the freedom to configure their system to suit their preferences,” said Kevin Hoare, president of Rockstar Toronto to PC gamer.

And they’ve done that. They’ve also made a game that’s surprising light on resources, and won’t require the bleeding edge to run well. To recap, here are the game’s recommended and minimum PC specs

Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1, Windows Vista 64 Bit Service Pack 2* (*NVIDIA video card recommended if running Vista OS)
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs) / AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs) @ 2.5GHz
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Video Card: NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB / AMD HD 4870 1GB (DX 10, 10.1, 11)
  • Sound Card: 100% DirectX 10 compatible
  • HDD Space: 65GB

Recommended System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.2GHZ (4 CPUs) / AMD X8 FX-8350 @ 4GHZ (8 CPUs)
  • Memory: 8GB Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB / AMD HD7870 2GB
  • Sound Card: 100% DirectX 10 compatible
  • HDD Space: 65GB

What sort of specs would you need to get the game running at that mystical 4K resolution? Not as high as you’d imagine, if you don;t mind 30 frames per second.

“To run the game on a 4K display at 30fps,” says Hoare, “you’ll need at minimum an AMD HD 7870 or Nvidia GTX 760 with 2GB of VRAM.” To get it running at 60fps, you’ll need a “high-end SLI or Crossfire setup.”

Of course, you’ll also need a 4K monitor or TV, which is where the prohibitive expense comes in. If you’ve got one of those, then you’re probably not really worrying about whether or not your system can run GTA V in 4K.

        It really is.
7870 recommended for a game of 2015 of this magnitude is very light.

Hey, my kid is a late 2013 vintage. Do games and children age differently then? Or should I be seriously offended?

Old. hah. Next thing you will be telling me I should trade in my Nokia 3310 for a newer model. Hah. Candice Swanepoel is a good model, I think.

At time of writing this comment there are 21 “7”s in this article(page). The game ships on 7 disks, 21/7 = 3

What do you need to run GTA 5 at 4k? R20000 and they will still DRM the shit.

Don’t Support DRM. The Witcher 3 is coming.

The PS4’s GPU is based off that 7870. Not surprising that 7870 is recommended. Minimum specs should be Xbox One settings.

GTA 3 is were it started getting good. Even a cyberpunk feel to it.

somedays, sometimes, you get a laugh. Today is one of those days. Well played.

AND I want the silly cyberpunk game sooner rather than later.

Yeah it made me laugh too.

But I was serious about the cyberpunk feel to GTA 3. Not actual cyberpunk but you still get that vibe.

I think for someone new to the “3D” versions, Vice City will feel way too old. Even GTA IV feels ancient.

If you evolved with GTA and played them as they came out VC is probably one of the best. I agree with IV though, it was very dull. I’m just sitting here, playing Sleeping Dogs until GTA V goes on special 🙂

I *hated* GTA IV. I got 10 hours in before I just gave up, out of a mixture of boredom and frustration. I loved the hell out of V.

GTA 4 is boring that’s why. Still kinda fun to drive around and use that shotgun.

I modded IV on my pc to make it more interesting. Makes things a bit easier when you can drive a Ferrari 458. Life looks better from a Ferrari 😉

I stick to the simple things that don’t change the gameplay, like adding interesting cars and bikes. Nothing too over the top.

It’s the same wit San Andreas for me. I have played it countless times on numerous platforms, but IV just sucked for me. And to be honest, if I clocked in 8 hours in GTAV, it’s a lot. It’s pretty and all, but a couple of things that I hate: you die too easy. Screw “reality”. I didn’t like the three character story arc. Lamar is a pain in the behind. I hate that pushing the anologue fully doesn’t make you jog.

I tried them all… Just didn’t finish any since 2!! But I am over this open world crap, they have too much to do and the story lines are blurred at best! I love a good story, that is why I game and now all I get is way points on a map…
