The biggest PC piracy group around is going on hiatus for a year

Whatever your reason for doing so, piracy is still wrong. It hurts the industry, studios and developers who’ve sunk a chunk of their life into creating the pilfered digital goods that you have running on your screen. Naturally, publishers have never been happy about how easily their goods have hit torrent sites within hours, taking the steps necessary to protect their products.

Denuovo has been a particularly successful method lately. Having already stopped Just Cause 3 from being cracked in time for a Christmas season thievery on torrent sites, this the led massive China-based cracking group 3DM to declare that video game piracy will be impossible by 2018 thanks to these more sophisticated measures. Now, they’re going to cease pirating single-player games all together.

That’s the announcement that was made by 3DM leader “Bird Sister”,who  wrote about the group decision to suspend cracking new games so that the impact of their actions can be measured by looking at video game sales. “We just had an internal meeting,” Bird Sister wrote via TorrentFreak.

Starting at the Chinese New Year [February 8], 3DM will not crack any single-player games. We’ll take a look at the situation in a year’s time to see if genuine sales have grown. Cracks by overseas warez groups will still get posted on the [3DM] forum, and we will actively deal with these.

While Denuovo isn’t mentioned by Bird Sister, you can bet that that anti-piracy is the headache that is giving them such a hassle in cracking games. Rise of the Tomb Raider just hit PC, and its Denuovo-based DRM has yet to be overridden and freely distributed. While it’s a massive setback for anyone who has come to rely on 3DM anti-DRM measures, they’re still only one group in an ocean filled with freebooting copyright infringers.

But if one of the biggest groups around is feeling frustrated with these measures, it’s an interesting sign of how the industry is changing.

Spend 1$ in Humble Bundle every month, and you will have a backlog so big at the end of the year it will eclipse the sun!

Or let’s all buy the indie games that are better than the “AAA” games at a fraction of the price and actually experience some creative games! 😀

      Exactly.
These days when you hear someone pirated a game you’re like: “Oh, still stuck in the 90s, aren’t you?”

Yes. This is a research project. You’re not going to crack the DRM and release pirate versions because you want to see if sales go up. I believe you.

Maybe Denuovo is 3DM and 3DM is Denuovo.
