7 New images and a new trailer for the animated adventure EPIC

It’s hard to argue with the claim that Pixar is King in the world of animated feature films, but that doesn’t mean that there are no challengers to the crown. Blue Sky Studios has already thrown lisping prehistoric creatures and Brazilian birds into the fray to become the new Numero Uno, and now it’s the turn of some little people (No, not Hobbits. I’m talking even little-ler) in their new film, Ferngully.

Wait, did I say Ferngully? Oops, I meant Epic. Blue Sky’s new movie is called Epic. Easy mistake to make.

“Epic” is a 3D CG action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden world unlike any other. From the creators of “Ice Age” and “Rio,” “Epic” tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world…and ours.

OK, to be fair, the story for Epic might not actually resemble the beloved 1992 animated film, Ferngully, that closely, but as far as visual aesthetic is concerned there are certainly quite a few similarities. Well, except for the Kung Fu fighting fairy dudes, or the shark-faced insect things shooting bows and arrows while riding birds. Thant being said though, the CGI is looking rather pretty on this one. Yes, I used the word pretty. Men can use it too.

Just as with the first teaser for the film, this new full trailer makes use of Snow Patrol’s “The Lightning Strike” for the soundtrack, which while a pretty great song, may be trying to oversell the drama element a bit, pretending to make the film a lot more mature and deeper than it actually is. It has quite the impressive voice cast though (well, except for Pitbull), which I would have thought would have been enough of an incentive to maybe get the older crowd interested, but hey, I’m just the guy who makes fun of Twilight so what do I know?

  1. Looks rather awesome, but hasn’t this story been done like a million times? “Outsider finds him/herself in new magical world, needs to come to terms then save said world?” Will still keep an eye out for it though.

According to James Cameron, no. This story has only been told once. In Avatar.
