Is the Avengers cast shooting an extra scene tonight or not?

Now you might be wondering what the big deal is about an extra scene. Pretty much every Marvel movie over the last few years has had an additional post-credit scene (the bane of those ladies who need to clean the cinemas afterwards, but have to wait until all the geeks leave!) and it’s kind of become their thing.

And both Thor and Iron Man also had their extra scenes shot way afterwards, with Iron Man‘s not even being in the “so called” final cut that was screened for press.

So what’s the fuss? Well according to those lucky few who were at the Hollywood premiere there already is a bonus credits scene, one which as expected sets up the next big thing in the Marvel movie universe.

So what are they shooting, and more importantly, why is Joss Whedon and Marvel studio head, Kevin Feige trying to keep it so secret?

The whole thing began at the Avengers press junket held in our early hours of the morning over in Americaland, when Robert Downey Jr made a claim that they were headed off after straight after the junket to film a final bonus scene. This drew an obvious look of disapproval from Feige, who was also on the panel, as if RDJ had just let slip something that he shouldn’t. Before the now-very attentive audience could respond, and possibly wilting under the glare from Feige, RDJ quickly gave a “No more comments!” before exiting stage left with all in attendance.

Slashfilm’s Germain had a one-on-one interview scheduled with Feige straight thereafter, so he took the opportunity to ask about what had just transpired, to which the Marvel exec flatly responded with “Do you always trust everything Robert Downey Jr. tells you?”

But us geeks are a tenacious lot, so in a different press conference Joss Whedon was also asked about Downey’s comments, and the director denied that there would be any bonus scenes being shot.

And that would have been the end of that. Clearly, RDJ was just hamming it up for the camera again, or maybe he was back on the sauce and had completely lost track of what film he was promoting at the time. Hey, it’s Hollywood, these things happen.

But then actor Mark Ruffala went and spoke to The Playlist:

“We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, ‘Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.’ ” Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the “The Avengers” when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, “Yeah. So I’m like, ‘All right, when are we doing that?’ Today after we’re done.”

If I could embed music in this article, you’d be hearing a DUHN DUHN DUUUUUHHHHNNN right about now.

So what could this bonus scene be that has resulted in so much secrecy that not even the actor’s know what they’re going to be doing? One would think that if this was just a setup for the expected Avengers spin-off movies like Captain America 2, Iron Man 3 or Thor 2 there would be remarkably less skulduggery going on.

So could it be that they’re setting up something else entirely? Some other title that Marvel has lined up? Feige has already shot down rumoursthat it was the long in develepment Edgar Wright Ant Man movie, so what else could it be?

By Thor’s hammer, please let it be Guardians of the Galaxy!
