Laika may not be a name as well known as Pixar/Disney or Dreamworks, but over the last couple years, they produced Coraline and Paranorman, two of my favourite animated movies. And by animated, I mean by by hand, as they prefer to use stop-motion instead of CGI because that’s just how they roll.

Their latest effort, The Boxtrolls, seems to be following their previous trend of charmingly weird and weirdly charming tales, and today you get a great taste of that not just one, but two new trailers.

A family event movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” that introduces audiences to a new breed of family: The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.

I have to admit that I may have exaggerated the “new trailer” part a bit, as that first trailer – which is actually half trailer, half featurette (a trailerette?) – was actually released earlier in the year already, but I just missed it somehow. I don’t know how or why, but I blame Darryn.

The Boxtrolls features the voices of Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan, and will be released in cinemas on September 26, 2014.
