Follow me and have a first look at Oddworld Soulstorm

Oddworld is just one of those series. The series your friend at school told you to play over and over again, but you didn’t want to. You were too busy being a purple dragon or bandicoot wearing pants, and then you went home and played video games, weirdo. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee first launched on the PS1 and PC all the way back in 1997 and the series has kinda plodded along since. There’ve been some sequels and reboots, spin-offs and remastering’s, but for the most part we haven’t seen a new Oddworld game since 2014’s Oddworld: New ‘n Tasty, and that was just a remake of the first game.

Well get ready everyone because we’re gettin’ another remake! This time, Abe’s Exodus from 1998 and the sequel to the original Oddysee is being remade and it looks gosh darn incredible. Well, at least the cinematic trailers do. Introduced by the series creator Lorne Lanning as part of Unity’s keynote event at GDC, the trailers are meant to show off the graphical fidelity, art and technology powering this new release. No gameplay was shown; it was very much a demonstration of some new rendering technologies Unity is putting out there, but that doesn’t mean the trailers themselves weren’t enough to get people hyped.

But here’s the weird thing. As I was saying earlier, Oddworld Soulstorm is a remake of the second game…with an entirely new story. Soulstorm is being pinned as what Exodus should have been in Lanning’s own words, following the well documented disappointment Lanning felt towards his second game. What that exactly means is yet to be seen. Perhaps this will be a reimagining of the second game with mechanics and story previously cut, or ta otally new take on Exodus akin to the more action platformer Oddworld games for the PS2. Details are scarce about what the game has to offer, with just the cinematics showing the general art around the characters and gameworld, but whatever the final product is, that art style will just never grow old. The release date for Oddworld Soustorm is still unknown.

I don’t know if I should be proud of myself or worried that I heard the exact sounds in my mind. And I’m talking original here, not the remake.

Interesting fact, Abe’s Odyssey is one of the few games that I know of that you can still run as is in Win10. I tend to play it every few years and it’s worked on all OSes I’ve had since it came out. Pretty good I’d say.

My last playthrough was New & Tasty but I kinda still prefer the original.
