In other year besides 2016, a sequel to Independence Day would possibly be the blockbuster highlight of the year. Thanks to the sensory onslaught of massive movies released this year though, Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence appears to just have been lost in the shuffle lately. Maybe the return of original star Will Smith would have given the buzz more impetus. Or maybe we just need another really good trailer to get us all pumped again like Randy Quaid before he flew a jet up an alien mothership’s unmentionables.

There’s a new TV spot out, which is a bit on the brief side, but definitely hints at exactly the type of big budget blockbuster action that could really put this sequel on everybody’s radar again. It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper patented Roland Emmerich epic disaster movie – and even longer since we’ve had a good one – but there’s certainly potential for the filmmaker to return to form here.

Check out the trailer below.

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

She’s coming? Who is “she”? Could we be seeing the alien queen of some sorts? Well, whoever “she” is, she’s apparently arriving in one seriously big ride. Emmerich spoke to EW and revealed just how much of an upgrade in size the aliens’ ship gets this time around.

“The Mothership comes to Earth. And it spans the Atlantic Ocean.”

Yep, that’s definitely big. And with an enemy with such massive weapons at their disposal, it’s going to take the whole world banding together to defeat them. A plot point that’s especially poignant for Emmerich.

“I always say, it’s a post-war world. We call [the first movie] the War of ‘96. Which we won! But it’s also kind of clear that they were going to come back. So we’ve stayed unified. In these days when our world is so not united, this is a very poignant thing to do in a movie. To show how much we can accomplish.”

Independence Day: Resurgence stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. It is scheduled for release on June 24, 2016.

So instead of installing Windows 95 on the alien computers to crash them, they will now install Windows 8.
