Although I have a fundamental aversion to film remakes hardwired into my DNA, I can’t help but do that “repeatedly nod while looking up and to the left” thing when I read news that Chloe Moretz is one of the frontrunners to star in the title role of a Carrie remake.
Variety is reporting that she is one of two young actresses being considered by director Kimberley Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) for the role that originally launched Sissy Spacek’s career as well gave a huge boom to the local pig blood industry.
At just 15 years of age, Moretz has already proven that she can out-act most of her senior colleagues. She’s been a foul-mouthed kid vigilante, a broody vampire and a precocious little French girl, so she may as well as add “homicidal telekinetic prom queen” to that list.
Also up for the role is much less well known singer and actress Hayley Bennett (The Hole) who will soon be seen opposite Ryan Gosling in Terence Mallick’s next project, Lawless.
All due respect to Ms Bennett, but I think Moretz would be absolutely perfect for the role of Carrie. She’s already shown with aplomb the more vulnerable as well as darkly violent sides that the role would demand.
Word around the blood drenched watercooler is also that director Pierce won’t be basing this off the 1976 Brian De Palma film, but rather going back to the source with a much more grounded take on the original Stephen King novel. With this approach and the people attached, this is actually shaping up into a remake that really I’m excited for.
