Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Rian Johnson’s Looper is already being hailed, by those lucky people across the pond who’s already seen it, as not only one of the best films of the year, but also one of the best time travel movies of all time. But what if Rian Johnson had made it slightly differently? Say, as a Disney family movie? In 1994? Starring a prepubescent JGL and a decidedly more hairy Bruce Willis?

There’s story going around that British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are “head-to-head in a race” to play superheroine Miss Marvel aka Carol Danvers in The Avengers 2. But here’s the thing, neither actress even remotely resembles Miss Marvel, and the story comes from the UK tabloid The Daily Mail who have a habit of kind of just making stuff up. Emily Blunt was previously attached to the Marvel universe as she was the first choice to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2 as well as The Avengers, but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts, paving the way for Scarlett Johansson’s cleavage to save the world.

Until we hear anything from a more reputable source, I think it’s safe to assume that is just a fanboy wishing to see Ms Blunt in a skimpy costume.

Sienna Miller is joining Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo in true story drama Foxcatcher, which tells the tale of the 1996 murder of Olympic wrestler David Schultz (Ruffalo) by his paranoid schizophrenic friend, John du Pont (Carrell). Miller will play Schultz’s wife, while Tatum will play his brother, Mark.

i09 thinks that Time Travel Stories Should Be Messy and they’re going to tell you why.

Here’s the new (German) trailer for Constantin Film’s 3D animated take on Tarzan, starring Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz in the motion captured titular role and Resident Evil‘s Spencer Locke as Jane. Animation quality-wise, it doesn’t quite match up to the big boys in the business, but otherwise doesn’t look too bad.

Gareth Edwards is keeping it real. -Istic, that is. Just as the Comic Con test reel footage hinted, his upcoming Godzilla movie is looking like something a little different to what fans of the radioactive-fire breathing, Japanese businessmen munching, giant lizard were used to. Edwards told Total Film (via Coventry Telegraph) what that is:

“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”

That “grounded” take certainly ignited the Comic Con crowd, which Edwards also remarked on”

“I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.”

Producer/director Rob Cohen will next be seeing his name up in lights for the Tyler Perry starring adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross. But if gender-confused psychologists are not your thing (Oh Lawdee!), then you may be more interested in one of Cohen’s upcoming project: The true story of Isaac Newton the detective.

“I’m developing for Gene Kirkwood, the guy who produced ‘Rocky,’ this story about Isaac Newton, but a story that no one knows. Isaac Newton was a detective at the latter part of his life. He worked for the royal mint as warden of the mint and master of the royal mint. His job was to track down counterfeiters. So I’ve got this great physicist tracking down the worst counterfeiter ever, this guy William Chaloner. It’s all real and we’re using physics and things to motivate the action.”

Well, damn. They’re using physics.

Here’s the new alternate poster for indie comedy The Details which sees Tobey Maguire as… well I’ll let the synopsis let you in on all the kooky details:

In the film, Jeff and Nealy Lang (Maguire and Elizabeth Banks) have an idyllic suburban home and a relationship on the skids after ten years of marriage. But, when a family of hungry raccoons ransacks their perfectly manicured backyard, Jeff becomes single-mindedly obsessed with eradicating the pests by any means necessary. Soon the relentless rodents aren’t merely uprooting the lawn, but also overturning the Langs’ entire bourgeois existence, as the man-versus-beast battle leads into an absurd mess of infidelity, extortion, organ donation and other assorted mayhem.

And that yet to be titled Female Expendables movie gets a little bit more real. Following on from the announcement of female MMA star turned female MMA star who can slightly act, Gina Carano, being the first lady attached to the X-(chromosome)-plosive film, Battlestar Galactica‘s resident ball breaker, Katee Sackhoff aka Starbuck, has also officially joined.

And save this nugget for a future game of six degrees of separation: Both ladies will next be seen on screen opposite Vin Diesel. Carano in Fast 6 and Sackhoff in Riddick.

Red Tails star Nate Parker has booked his seat next to Liam Neeson in action-thriller Non-Stop. Parker will play a passenger on board a plane that helps the air-marshall (Neeson) in defusing some unknown disastrous situation.

So remember that story last week about how The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was getting an Extended Edition? Yeah, that might not be true. Maybe. The news of EE came via a calendar released by WB showing off a release date for the film, but that was apparently an error, as this message from Warner Home Video claims:

“In the recently distributed calendar included in the Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary press kit, there was an erroneous mention of an Extended Edition release for The Hobbit film. This product has not been confirmed yet and we apologize for any confusion.”

So it might still happen, it’s just not official yet.

THR is reporting that CBS want to turn the Cameron Diaz/Justin Timberlake 2011 R-rated comedy Bad Teacher into a TV series. While, I can give you about 216 million reasons why they would choose to make this move, I admit that premise od a mean spirited gold digger who starts teaching middle school just to win the prize money in a school competition, has some sitcom potential. Helping matters along is the fact that “Community” and “Happy Endings”‘ Hilary Winston will be writing and executive producing.

Here’s the first behind the scenes pic for Luc Besson’s Malavita, a black comedy starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron and John D’Leo and follows the story of “the Manzonis, a notorious mafia family who gets relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. While they do their best to fit in, old habits die hard and they soon find themselves handling things the ‘family’ way.”

David “The Fighter” O. Russell’s next movie may not have a name yet, but it sure as hell has just got a phenomenal cast. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams are all set to star in the ensemble financial true story drama about “a notorious financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), who were forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians. At the epicenter of the entire tale, is the passionate and volatile leader of the New Jersey state assembly (Renner) who is also the local hero and mayor of impoverished Camden.”

It’s what most fanboys have been asking for for ages, and now X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has joined the chorus of voices, by saying that she would want Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Studios to have their respective Marvel Comics properties crossover. Specifically, by having the X-Men show up in a future Avengers movie.

I would love it. I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige. Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written… yeah, absolutely.

And here is quite frankly, the best thing you’ll see today. It’s Cooking with Christopher Walken, which I pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster becomes a very real, very regular thing.
