Babadook

If there is one thing that always freaks me out in horror movies, it’s the way children are used to spook us. Either they are sitting in wedding dresses, rocking themselves or are just standing creepily next to their twin with blood rushing past. They just tickle that part of my brain that says ‘run for cover!’, so watching this trailer for The Babadook has probably ruined my sleep pattern for the foreseeable future.

From writer-director Jennifer Kent (Babe: Pig in the City) comes a movie with a tongue twister name, but some very good street cred, as it received very positive responses following its showing at the Sundance Film Festival and looks to be a rather chilling experience.

The movie is based around a rather difficult ‘probably needs Ritalin’ six-year-old boy named Samuel and his mother Amelia. Six years after the death of his father, Samuel is a nightmare to look after making loving him rather tricky. His constant nightmares are made worse when a book called ‘The Babadook’ appears. Samuel believes that the creature he is dreaming about is in the book and to make matters worse his mother starts catching glimpses of said creature. I am sure it’s all fun and games from there on. Have a look at the trailer and make sure you keep the lights on tonight.

The Babadook is sitting with a neat 88% on Metacritic and stars Essie Davis as Amelia and Noah Wiseman as Samuel. As of yet there is no release date for South Africa but I am sure you could ‘netflix’ it.
