If you had told me 20 years ago that goofy Woody Harrelson from Cheers would one day become a serious dramatic actor, I would probably have told you to slap my silly and call me Susan if that ever happens.

Well, hi, my name is Susan and you slap like a girl, Darryn, as Harrelson seems be giving bigtime acting heavyweights like Christian Bale, Forrest Whitaker, Casey Affleck and Sam Shepard a run for their thespian money as he “haunts their mountains” in this new trailer for Out of the Furnace.

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of “Crazy Heart,” comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so – with nothing left to lose – Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.

Firstly, because I know you’re going to ask: The song is called “Heart of Gold” and it’s by Ivana Xl. You’re welcome.

Secondly, writer-director Scott Cooper has assembled one insanely good cast for this film, and judging from this and the film’s first trailer, they all seem to be firing on all cylinders. With the palette, tone and just general state of decay being shown here, I’m getting a very Winter’s Bone vibe from this – only with more fistfights and new Batman’s brother screaming at old Batman – which is most definitely a good thing.

With the talent of all the people behind this, I won’t be surprised to see a few nods for nomination come awards season, and with Out of the Furnace releasing on December 6, 2013, it will be in time to get it’s foot in the door.

  1. This looks very cool. Awesome cast and some sterling performances it seems. Casey Affleck is one of the strangest but most riveting actors of his generation.
