If you had told me a few years ago that a feature film remake of 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, would not just be one of my favourite movies of 2012, but would also get me to actually enjoy watching Charming Potato on-screen, I would probably have punched you in your charming potatoes in disbelief. But that’s exactly what happened when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller turned a cheesy late 80’s TV series starring Richard Grieco and Johnny Depp’s unruly hair into a self-referential, inside joke laden laugh-a-thon, that ended up doing relatively good business at the box-office.

They continued that streak with this year’s sequel, 23 Jump Street, which may have fell just a tad short of the comedic brilliance of the first film, but was still hellishly entertaining and managed to best its predecessor’s box-office take by about $120 million, pulling in $319 million on just a $50 million budget. And you know what that means, right? THREEQUEL!

Deadline are reporting that Sony Pictures have begun production on a third Jump Street, with Rodney Rothman already confirmed as screenwriter. Rothman was one of the writers on 22 Jump Street along with Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel.

At this point it’s unclear whether or not Lord and Miller will also return (pretty please with sprinkles on top!) or which institution bumbling undercover cops Schmidt and Jenko will be sent to infiltrate next. Maybe they will actually follow through on that hilarious montage at the end of 22 Jump Street, which showed off the future of the franchise, including 23 Jump Street: Medical School. Hell, maybe Jonah Hill will actually get replaced by Seth Rogen for one movie due to “a contract dispute”. Either way, I cannot wait for more.

And just for interests sake, here’s the full list of sequels shown off at the end of 22 Jump Street.

  • 23 Jump Street: Medical School
  • 24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange
  • 25 Jump Street: Semester at Sea
  • 26 Jump Street: Arts School
  • 27 Jump Street: Culinary School
  • 28 Jump Street: Veterinary School
  • 29 Jump Street: Sunday School
  • 30 Jump Street: Flight Academy
  • 31 Jump Street: Ninja Academy
  • 32 Jump Street: Fireman Academy
  • 33 Jump Street: Generations
  • 34 Jump Street: Return of the Ghost
  • 35 Jump Street: Traffic School
  • 36 Jump Street: Military School
  • 37 Jump Street: Scuba Class
  • 38 Jump Street: Dance Academy
  • 39 Jump Street: The Electronic Game
  • 40 Jump Street: The Retirement Home
  • 41 Jump Street: Magic School
  • 42 Jump Street: Beauty School
  • 43 Jump Street: Mariachi School
  • 2121 Jump Street (aka Space Camp)

I’m seriously holding thumbs that they at least make it to 31 Jump Street: Ninja Academy.
