Robert De Niro may once have been a titan of the screen, but the last few years have seemingly seen the 71-year old actor mostly just taking menial jobs to stay busy in his twilight years. Ironically, that’s kind of what his character does in The Intern, the latest bit of celluloid artificial sweetener from writer/director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated).
If you’ve ever wondered what The Devil Wears Prada would be like if Anne Hathaway was actually the boss – but like, super-duper nice – and her intern wasn’t a clumsy young girl, but rather a distinguished older gentleman, as fluent in giving sage advice as he is in Mandarin, then this may be the movie for you.
Based on this first trailer the film may be doing its best to champion the cause that “old guys can also be cool”, but it probably won’t be challenging the viewer much dramatically. Expect this to show up on MNet as the Sunday night movie in a year’s time, and be a hit with your grandmother.
Ben Whittaker is a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway).
The Intern also stars Rene Russo, Anders Holm, Adam DeVine, Andrew Rannells, Linda Lavin, Christina Scherer, Celia Weston, JoJo Kushner, Zack Pearlman, Jason Orley and Nat Wolff. It is scheduled for release on September 25, 2015.
