I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but there appears to be a big resurgence in Hollywood lately when it comes to Westerns. There have been a number of high profile projects over the last year or two – with the biggest, the Magnificent Seven remake, still to come. Unfortunately, with the exception of Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful Eight, the others have all been more Lucky Luke than Clint Eastwood, if you know what I mean.
And exactly where on the spectrum The Duel falls is still unclear, though it certainly looks promising. The latest genre entry sees fellow Hunger Games co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson going all High Noon on each other, as a respective “Texas Ranger who investigates a series of murders in a small town led by a charismatic preacher. However, the routine undercover investigation soon turns personal for the ranger who must solve the case before he loses everything to the mysterious town.”
Check it out below.
The Duel was written by Matt Cook (Triple 9), whose script actually ended up on 2009 Blacklist – a list of the best unproduced screenplays. It was directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here). It is scheduled for release in theatres and VOD on June 24.
