Update: For those who weren’t completely convinced, this is now 100% confirmed via the Official Xbox Magazine.

Multiplayer is coming to Mass Effect 3. When it comes to one of the most beloved new franchises of this generation, you have to ask yourself… is this a really good or really bad thing? We have seen multiplayer destroy great single player games before.

We have confirmation of the news, a magazine cover image and more after the jump.

The crazy scoop comes to us via Australia’s gaming magazine PC PowerPlay (via Kotaku), which has the words plastered on its front cover. Here’s the what they say on their next issues web page:

That’s right – Mass Effect 3 is getting multiplayer! We travel to BioWare’s office in Edmonton for hands-on time with the series’ first foray into online gameplay, and chat with Mass Effect Series Producer and Mass Effect 3 Project Director Casey Hudson about the decision to go multiplayer in the epic battle for the galaxy.

Well the news is all but confirmed by BioWare themselves but this hardly looks like something that won’t be true, or has an established magazine just sought out to destroy their reputation for some limelight? I don’t think so.

Here’s the cover that was spotted:

OK… so then, if this is true… are we happy or sad about this? I know there is a lot of pressure to release games with multiplayer these days, but that doesn’t mean it has to be done.

Mass Effect has obviously been a very personal experience for all of us, so inviting someone else into that space may feel a bit awkward. I’m starting to think that due to the choice based nature of the game, as well as conversation systems and so on… that the multiplayer will probably be limited to certain areas, or maybe even created as a separate mode altogether.

It says fight alongside your friends, which obviously points at co-op, however that doesn’t mean that the game won’t have team based versus combat.

So what do all of ya’ll think?
