[Updated] Rockstar blames Sony for L.A. Noire glitches

In a rather uncomfortable moment it appears that Rockstar and Sony have come to blows behind the scenes regarding some issues gamers have experienced playing L.A. Noire on the PS3.

Earlier yesterday Rockstar published a post on it’s support blog stating that if you had an older model PS3 and had updated for Firmware 3.61 and your machine was beeping 3 times and shutting off or overheating then they recommended you contact Sony as it was their fault this was happening.

According to their official statement

This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to two hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed.

Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or ‘Red Lighting’ after having installed 3.61.

At this time we are recommending contacting Sony directly to report the overheating issue. However, this is not the end of our support; we are continuing to test L.A. Noire on all firmware versions and hardware models to isolate the issues and see what can be done. As always, we will update this article as soon as we have updates.

The emphasis is mine but it shows that Rockstar really didn’t have any doubt as to what was causing the problems in game, however just as any soap opera can’t end there the story has taken a twist.

A couple of hours after posting the post was apparently taken down from Rockstar’s support page without any reason being given which can only lead me to believe that Sony got in touch with Rockstar and either used their considerable influence or team of lawyers to get the statement removed.

With the information we have at hand now  I can only suggest holding out until later this week then Firmware 3.62 is likely to be released before spending to much time on the PS3, hopefully it’s all resolved by the time L.A. Noire is released here tomorrow or are you already just going to get it on the Xbox 360 instead?

Rockstar has posted a joint statement along with Sony in regards to the overheating issues

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3’s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire.  At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat.   We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise.   If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:
