We already know that a new Mortal Kombat movie is coming, and that it’ll be made by Kevin Tancharoen – the guy who made those initially intriguing Mortal Kombat Legacy short films. Great! He seemed to really know the source material – and though he played loose with the series canon, he captured the ridiculous spirit of it all. then why am I worried about the new film?
According to Bloody Disgusting, the new film follows a “lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is.” Ugh. How hard is it to just stick to the damned source material when it comes to film to game adaptations? A supermarket employee? Really? show me one cool movie where the protagonist starts out as a lowly store employ…
Though hardly anybody could be pressed to call the first Mortal Kombat – released in 1995 – “good,” it largely stuck to the source material – and is still probably one of the better adaptations. Tancharoen is still set to direct the Oren Uziel penned film, but no actors have been attached. On that note – who’d you cast as your favourite Kombatant?
