When it was announced that Patty Jenkins (Monster) was no longer directing the Thor sequel, and that Marvel may have actually fired her over creative differences, fans were admittedly a bit anxious. When actress Natalie Portman – who was one of the main reasons that Jenkins was approached initially – then publicly vented her displeasure about the whole debacle, there appeared to be a dark cloud hanging over the God of Thunder’s film.

However, fans received a nice Xmas gift last year, when it was announced that Alan Taylor will now be in the director’s chair. Taylor is a well known TV director that has worked on several high profile shows such as Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Rome, Mad Men, Oz, Lost, and most recently, Game of Thrones.

It was this latter stint on the sprawling sword and sorcery epic, of which he directed 5 of the 12 episodes, that initially caught Marvel’s eye. But there were still doubts as to whether or not the production now had a definite game plan and focus, the lack of which was apparently one of the reasons that Jenkins got the banhammer.

Now while in a interview with Empire about War Horse, actor Tim Hiddlestone – who has played Thor’s half-brother and nemesis, Loki, in both the first film as well as Joss Whedon’s upcoming The Avengers – has dropped the first bit of concrete info about Thor 2:

“And all I know about Thor 2 is that we’re supposed to film it in London in the summer and that it is being directed by Alan Taylor.”

He also hinted (very carefully, of course) about the future of the God of Mishchief:

“I don’t want to spoil anything here. Loki’s eternal predilection is to dance on the fault lines of villainy and redemption. I think whatever happens to him, he’ll always keep people guessing.”

The big question for me, is that if Loki is going to be returning for Thor 2, and we already know that he is the archvillain in The Avengers, which takes place chronologically after Thor 1, does that mean that his character will be surviving the end of that film? We still don’t know the timeline or any other plot details for Thor 2, so it could also be that it may sit between Thor 1 and The Avengers. After all, the end of Thor 1 certainly left the Asgardian realm in a very tough spot. Up until now though, everybody has just assumed that this would be addressed in The Avengers.

Last year, in a different interview, Hiddlestone did mention that he had initially signed for up to six movies with Marvel, although his wording did imply that those roles were not definite. Even if they were, I seriously doubt that he would be taking centre stage in all of them.

Thor 2 is currently scheduled for released on 13 November 2013, but much closer than that is The Avengers on 27 April 2012, where we will probably get some answers. But until such time, what do you guys think? Sound off in the comments with your ideas.

I think Loki will be the arch enemy in Thor 2 until about half way through where a sudden change of heart brought on by the love that some random hotty shows Thor shows Loki the error of his ways. He will then rush off to stop the entire destruction of the universe (which 5 minutes ago was unstoppable) and he’ll succeed only to lose his own life in the process…  The next 3 movies will feature Loki as the lovable yet dead ghost who helps Thor with his trouble and counsels him in the hard time…

For the love of every single movie fan in the world who even has a modicum of taste, don’t ever become a screenwriter.

I reckon Gavin pretty much has it spot on except for the dead ghost bit. Probably been watching Star Wars too much.
