So I’m looking at having my heart replaced with that of a Belgian Draft horse, because I don’t know about you guys, but I simply see no other way for me to make it out of 2012 without some kind of cardiac event as a result of all the amazing (see what I did there?) geek films coming out.
Case in point: The Amazing Spider-Man, which – judging from this new trailer – is looking stupendous. We also get out first real proper look at the Lizard in action. In his labcoat! Oh, be still my geeking heart!
A select few press were invited yesterday by Sony (clearly mine just got lost in the mail) to their studio lot to view the trailer on the big screen in 3D. Apparently director Marc Webb has made this film from the ground up with 3D in mind, and according to the reports has really incorporated it brilliantly, particularly in the Spider-Man swinging through town sections.
Damn, it looks like I may just have to don the goofy glasses for this one.
Synopsis:
The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

All this hype with Avengers and TDKR this one flew under the radar a bit for me. Got my full attention now. Awesome trailer.

Spider-Man’s weakness is melodrama.

Does anyone really give a shit what happened to Peter’s parents? I know it’s the big differentiator of this reboot, but jeez, I’m so sick of seeing it in the promo material. Otherwise the film looks great. And I’ll totally watch its slickness in shot-for-3D.

They’re drilling it home as a means of trying to show that they’re all new, all different. So yeah, it’s turning into a dead horse real fast. But like you mentioned, the rest of it looks great.
I’m particularly impressed with the castings. I never had a problem initially with Raimi’s casting, but in retrospect, and compared to these guys, you realize just how much more appropriate these guys are.

The funny thing is, other than trivially knowing why a superhero did something, do any but the most devoted fan care. How many kids did the Punisher have? What was Bruce Wayne’s mom called? Was Superman’s dad a scientist, a politician or just a dude with a handy escape pod?
Doesn’t matter.

Still have no idea what everyone’s problem with Garfield is. He’s a good actor and he looks the part.
That voice-over in the trailer better not figure too significantly in the film as it sounds dreary and gormless as hell.
But otherwise, this shows promise. I’m reading Ultimate Spider-Man with Peter Parker for the first time and this looks like it’s riffing off that in some ways

Say what now? Who has a problem with Garfield?

Quite a few, apparently. People seem to find him annoying. I think he’s a fantastic actor.
I watched an English movie of his recently, where he plays someone who just got out of prison for murdering a child when he was ten.
Seriously, I’m not ashamed to say as a dude, that he fucking breaks your heart in that role.
I highly recommend it if you can find it

Boy A? I actually just told somebody a few days ago, that I’ve never seen it and really want to,

Yeah, that’s the one. I think it was inspired by that story of the two kids who murdered a child after having supposedly watched a Childs Play movie. Sparked a whole furore over violence in films IIRC.
There’s some parts where his performance borders on cringe-worthy (there’s a tiny bit in a rave which was just laughable for me) but 99 % of it is very good. And like I said, fucking heartbreaking.
