James Franco has been doing some of the best work of his career over last few years. Sure, he got out-acted by a make-believe monkey in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but he was fantastic in 127 Hours. And now he’s teaming up with acclaimed director Sam Raimi to bring us a previously untold origin story (where have I heard that before?) of L Frank Baum’s classic literary character, the Wizard of Oz.

While the premise and talent is intriguing , I am still not entirely convinced that we’re not about to see another Alice in Wonderland disaster though (face it Burton fanboys, that movie was horrible). But there’s certainly no denying that the snippets of Oz we saw in the trailer looked magnificent. As can be seen in these new images.

I tried to get as high-res versions as possible of these images, as they are undoubtedly wallpaper worthy. These screenshots and the footage from the trailer seems to indicate a magical vibrancy to this world that I last encountered in Avatar’s Pandora, and certainly make me far more excited to see this movie than I previously was. Hell, I may even see it in 3D.

No wait, that last part is just crazy talk. I blame the sensory overload.

Synopsis:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
