Tuesday Box Office Report – One Hobbit to rule them all

Yeah, we were on break yesterday, which meant no number-based stories based on the top ten movies in the US of A. What are you going to do about it?

Beat me senseless with a leftover film reel for the unreleased Hawaiian movie Ernest gets leyed? Fair enough! Numbers, away!

It’s official: The Hobbit is a hit with cash registers. The latest Middle Earth film took in over $84 million over the weekend, beating previous December record holder I am Legend, which clocked in a sum of $77 million way back in the December of 2007.

That total also puts it way ahead of the last Lord of the Rings film, as The Return of the King managed to snag itself a not too shabby $73.3 million over three days when it was released back in 2003.

Here’s a look at who made what over the weekend.

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $84.7 Million
  • Rise of the Guardians – $7.4 Million
  • Lincoln – $7.2 Million
  • Skyfall – $7 Million
  • Life of Pi – $5.4 Million
  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – $5.1 Million
  • Wreck-It Ralph – $3.27 Million
  • Playing for keeps – $3.24 Million
  • Red Dawn – $2.3 Million
  • Silver Linings Playbook – $2 Million

Taking more than half of the total revenue of that month, The Hobbit left very little for the rest of the top nine. Rise of the Guardians managed to stay safe in spot 2, but it wasn’t exactly pulling in record numbers, while Lincoln surged ahead with some extra cash to be the wealthiest of Oscar Contenders.

  1. I thought it was a great movie. I can see how some people thought its pacing wasn’t great in the first half, but nice to see a slow build up.

I have to say, both OVG and I agreed it was well done. It’s a very subtle 3D, except for a few scenes with ‘oh my god, I was almost hit by a REAL arrow’ you barely notice it. And OVG moans the shit about ddds! (You know, just for a change…)

I must say that I was completely underwhelmed by the Hobbit. I thought it didn’t live up to the book even slightly. When I watched Lord of the Rings, I understood why they had to cut out so much of the books, and I was thrilled with how they pulled it off. I walked out of the Hobbit thinking they had just ruined one of my favourite books. My better half asked me halfway if I was as bored as her, and I had to agree, it was boring. BORING. Last half hour rocked though… but not worth the first 90minutes of boredom. I wish a real Hobbit movie would come out 🙁
