THE HOBBIT is going to take a bit longer to go THERE AND BACK AGAIN

When you’re 4 ft tall with a diminutive stride and feet like a 1980’s female Russian Olympic wrestler, well then walking places takes time. Just ask Darryn. Well, you would be able to ask him if he was back from the kitchen, where I sent him an hour ago for my sandwiches and tea.

In his absence, we’ll have to call on our old pal Bilbo Baggins, who reveals that the last of his proposed three films, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is going to be taking a bit longer to get to us. Six months longer in fact.

Both the first and second films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, had end of the year release dates: the first dropping December 14 last year, while the second will be out just one day shy of a year later on December 13, 2013.

But seeing as how there was only supposed to be two films originally, with enough extra stuff to make a third, director Peter Jackson and his friends really just had to shoot additional scenes to complete that film and therefore could afford to set its release date for July 18, 2014.

Now Deadline reports that New Line Cinema has pushed the film back from that US Summer release date by six months, to be released on December 17, 2014.

While no explicit reason for the delay is given, you would have to think that a couple of time travelling mutants might have had something to do with it. Had The Hobbit: There and Back Again kept it’s original date, it would have found itself fighting for box office supremacy with the highly anticipated X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now the closest rival is Dreamworks’ Despicable Me spinoff, Minions, but somehow I don’t think that those little guys are going to beat these little guys.

And now I suddenly have a craving for some midget wrestling. “Darryn! Entertain me!”

Given that the Hobbit is one of my favourite books of all time, it’s astonishing how disinterested I am in these films. I still haven’t seen the first, for God’s sake

I also loved the Hobbit (book), but based on how much I didn’t like the first movie, I’m not at all excited for this one.
