Melissa Leo is moving into M. Night Shyamalan's WAYWARD PINES

It looks like M. Night Shake-n-Bake is getting ready to pull a plot twist on his career. After having been written off by many as one trick pony, Shyamalan’s next film, the Will and Jaden Smith sci-fi actioner, After Earth, actually doesn’t look too bad. But deadly futuristic father-son bonding is not the only thing on his plate. He’s also set to produce and direct Wayward Pines, FOX’s upcoming event series which now just landed itself a true fighter of an actress in Melissa Leo.

Leo has been a common face in TV dramas and indie movies since the 1990’s, but for many it was her Oscar winning turn as the white trash matriarch, Alice Ward, in David O. Russell’s The Fighter that really made her a household name. And she’s been simply owning every single role she’s been in since then.

Hopefully that run of form continues into “mind-bending thriller, Wayward Pines, the first of two “event series” – a series with a smaller episode count but with feature film-like budget and production values – that FOX has announced alongside 24: Live Another Day.

According to Deadline, Leo will join the already cast Matt Dillon, who will play “Secret Service agent Ethan Burke, who arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions.”

Leo will play Burke’s “deadly rival”, Pam, an “intense, unpredictable nurse who first takes care of Ethan when he wakes up in the Wayward Pines hospital” but is more involved and knows way more about what’s going than she lets on.

Wayward Pines is based on Blake Couch’s Twin Peaks-style, twisting mystery novel bestseller, Pines, which is being adapted by Chad Hodge, creator of doomed series The Playboy Club and Runway, both of which got the cancellation axe very early in their runs. Uh oh. Let’s hope that we’ll be seeing more Sixth Sense Shyamalan than Happening Shyamalan.
