Joss Whedon talks Black Widow in THE AVENGERS 2: AGE OF ULTRON

One thing I love about the Marvel slate of hero films, is that they’ve cast each hero perfectly. You can’t picture Iron Man not being played by Robert Downey Jr, while Tom Hiddleston seems to genuinely relish his role as Loki. Scarlett Johansson also deserves quite a fair bit of praise as the Black Widow, secret SHIELD agent Natasha Romanoff.

She’ll be back for the Avengers sequel, as well as the Captain America sequel and according to director Joss Whedon who spoke to Nerd HQ Q&A (via MTV), Natasha is huge.

No, not in that way, you fiends. SHIELD skintight uniform regulations and all that. Instead, Whedon reckons that it’s more fun to juxtapose the fact that Natasha happens to be a mere mortal who is standing toe to toe with flying thunder gods and green steroid rage monsters instead:

Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don’t have their own franchises. Although she in ‘Cap 2,’ [and] she’s great. She was the most fun for me because she’s not a hero, you know, and it’s something that I read—and I feel bad that I can’t remember who wrote the book—but it’s in one of the books explaining, ‘These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It’s a different thing—it’s a different skill set—and you don’t have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.’ And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I’ve got going on with her in the second one is killer.

I enjoyed Scarlett’s performances, as she stops these films from being complete sausage festivals. I’d also love to see more of Cobie Smaulder’s Maria Hill in the sequels, but what I want most of all? For Joss Whedon to write some better dialogue for the character as well.

I don’t like her or Hawkeye. They have no powers. Black widows scenes in Avengers had me laughing. The part where she jumps from captains hands twist then catches the aircraft speeder. Omg really. She’s just an ordinary human. Her an Hawkeye are secondary characters keep them in the back. Didn’t really think they added much to any of the films. If they were killed off I wouldn’t care. I really don’t care for scarlet Johansson. I think she is a horrible actress. Apparently all the actors are demanding more screen time. This will be the down fall of the series. I mean really just be happy you’re a par of something special and get paid well and such your mouth.

I completely disagree. I not only enjoyed her a lot in Avengers, I thoroughly enjoyed her in Ironman 2. I’m really glad that she is playing a huge part in Captain America 2. I’m looking forward to seeing what else they do with Hawkeye. When DC finally get their act together and start releasing 3 movies every 2 years like Marvel is, and the DC world is borderline rediculous and shallow over the top experiences one after each other as opposed to the more down to earth approach Marvel have been using, you will then begin to see the importance of these characters.
