Two new flicks hit the North American Box Office this past weekend, each one bearing a two in its title. Only one of them was an original though, as Two Guns went head to head with The Smurfs 2. So which one did better off of the back of a summer blockbuster period in films? Well the answer might hit your right in the smurfberries.Nah, I’m kidding. Two Guns may not have pulled in record numbers, but the Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg cop flick still took the top spot, bleeding The Wolverine out of the number one position. It’s a significantly low take for Two Guns though, as the star power of those two actors failed to really attract any attention.

Proving that organised religion might be a complete lie, The Smurfs 2 still managed to crack the top three, raking in $18.2 million. Still, that’s pretty smurfing lower than the results of the first film, which took in $35.6 million in its opening weekend in 2011, a total that was made possible back then by a weak summer line-up.

That, and even that first film was considered better than the current sequel, which is the equivalent of asking which piece of dog crap smells fresher. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend.

  • 2 Guns – $27.3 Million
  • The Wolverine – $21.7 Million
  • The Smurfs 2 – $18.2 Million
  • The Conjuring – $13.6 Million
  • Despicable Me 2 – $10.3 Million
  • Grown Ups 2 – $8.1 Million
  • Turbo – $6.4 Million
  • RED 2 – $5.6 Million
  • The Heat – $4.7 Million
  • Pacific Rim – $4.5 Million

And now for something completely different. As you may have seen above, the totals show for the top ten so far are for the North American box office. But what about locally? Well I’ve got those figures below and internationally, we’re not that different at all. Minus the fact that the USA has literally a hundreds more cinemas than we do. Here’s what made the top ten on our side of the globe as of July 28:

  • The Wolverine – R3.54 Million
  • Despicable Me 2 – R2.65 Million
  • World War Z – R1.726 Million
  • The Internship  – R1.2 Million
  • The Big Wedding  – R498 755
  • White House Down  – R429 405
  • Scary Movie 5  – R343 412
  • Tyler Perry Presents Peeples  – R339 869
  • Monsters University  – R339 186
  • Man of Steel  – R305 921

Damn, not bad SA. The Wolverine is clearly at the top here, being shown at the most cinemas in the country, reaching 102 screens on opening weekend. That means that around 50-55 000 people saw that film if you check local ticketing prices. International films are clearly at the top, as the closest local movie is Die Laaste Tango, clocking in at 18 with R56 000 after four weeks of showing on the big screen.

In fact, that film hasn’t done too badly at all, making R1.2 million so far. Which isn;t bad at all for a movie that cost R1.3 million to make and…hoo boy, that ain’t good.

  1. Pacific Rim was quite good. I enjoyed watching it this weekend even if it was in 3D

Remember – this movie is not about a deep plot. It is about eye candy in the form of robot/monster violence and it does look really schweeeeeeet! Summary of plot (no spoilers promise) http://9gag.com/gag/av0PyQn
