Friday Fright Club: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Over here at The Movies, we love a good satire…and I’m sure you know this already after all our love letters to Cabin in the Woods. We have all since not relented in our daily declarations of love to the folks over at Mutant Enemy Productions but I always like to remind people that, about two years before Cabin, there was another film that deserves our attention: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. As a note, let me just issue all of you a spoiler warning!

tdveNow, this is strictly a comedy horror so while scares are not as prominent as pure horrors, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil manages to wholly draw you into its bizarre blend of blood and laughs as we watch, once again, how a gang of college kids manage to be sent to early graves in a forest populated by hillbillies…though in the case of this film, it is mostly of their own doing.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil opens as a generic horror film: College kids stopping off at a creepy gas station en route to a cabin in the woods, where they are frightened by the appearance and behaviour of two creepy hillbillies. Very soon, though, the genre is turned completely on its head as we are then treated to the events from the hillbillies point of view who turn out the be there protagonists of our film, Tucker and Dale (Alan Tudyk and and Tyler Labine), where it becomes quite clear that they are good-natured and only managed to scare the college kids because of their inferiority complex and appearance.

From here on out were are treated to a utterly fresh new look at the ‘Hillbilly’ genre as the film follows the misunderstood hillbillies, not a bad bone in their bodies, cause the college kids to idiotically cause their owns deaths as they take Tucker and Dale at face value, especially when one of their own, Allison (the beautiful Katrina Bowden), seemingly gets kidnapped by them.

The beauty of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is how, between poking fun at all the tropes of the genre, it how it balances out a bloody gore-fest with laughs as your heroes try their utmost to be good people, but somehow the college kids just keep dropping their flies as Tucker and Dale’s actions keep on being misunderstood as hostile actions…such as Tucker waving around a chain saw like a lunatic, while he’s actually just being harassed by bees while chopping down a tree.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is an instant cult classic for lovers of the horror genre, and if you loved Cabin in the Woods this would be right up your ally, even though it has a few more comedic elements than the latter, and I highly recommend you see it as soon as possible. It also helps that, as always, Alan Tudyk is a leaf on the wind…watch him soar. What are you waiting for?!

I loved the bit where he comes running out with the chainsaw while trying to get away from the bees.
