As far as comic book roles go, Hugh Jackman is the Wolverine. Even though he wasn’t the first choice to play the character when Bryan Singer brought him and the rest of the X-Men onto the big screen, he owned his role and has been running with it ever since. The Wolverine is a prime example of this, as Jackman teamed up with director James Mangold to make a film that was pretty damn good overall.

And for the sequel, they’ve got some ideas floating around.

“I don’t want to dive into another one until we have a compelling reason to do another one”, Jackman said to EW, explaining that they weren’t going to rush another film out of the gate.

I love the character, he’s kind of like a best friend to me, and I don’t ever want to take [him] or the fans for granted. …I think we’ve got a great opportunity to make something really cool, but it has to be great. That’s what we’re all working toward… I was on the phone with Jim Mangold last night. There are some really cool ideas that I’m dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even [fully] formed yet.

The Wolverine made over $414 million worldwide, a figure that Fox will want to repeat. And as long as Jackman and Mangold can find a story that won’t go pear-shaped in the third act, I’d be more than happy to see them return. Jackman won’t be sheathing his claws soon though, as he’ll be seen next in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
