New writers join the Enterprise crew to help warp STAR TREK 3 into the 50th anniversary frontier

Doctor Who isn’t the only piece of sci-fi celebrating a 5oth birthday, as the Star Trek franchise will be going boldly towards a half century of existence in 2016. With the latest sequel making some good numbers at the box office, and no new series on the way, something needs to be done at Paramount to take advantage of that possibly lucrative celebration.

And to do just that, they’re plotting a course towards a third film in 2016 that’ll have some new writers at the helm.

Star Trek 1 and 2 writer Robert Orci will be joined by Patrick McKay and J.D Payne, two fresh ensigns that’ll be earning their stripes on this film. Alex Kurtzman, who usually collaborates with Orci, will be sitting this film out however, as will Damon Lindleloff as well hopefully.

Some fresh new blood might just be perfect for a third film, because as enjoyable as Star Trek Into Darkness was, it was essentially more of the same. Add to that some cryptic guessing games that panned out disappointingly, and it resulted in a film that could have been much better in the end. As for a director, it looks like Joe “Attack the block” Cornish is still in the running for the captains chair.
